It depends on if you want a free forum like Proboards or a paid forum like Xenforo. Do you have an idea on what you want your forum to be about?

  1. Think about a subject that you going to base your website/Forum on, Like Gaming or maybe TV/films.
  2. Think of a name and get resources in readiness so that you have your stuff ready, like Logo design and ideas about what you want to add
  3. Pick the Forum software that you want to use, from free to payware. I would go with payware, to begin with, you want to start low 🙂
  4. Once you have your forum software, you need a server. You might end up picking a Forum free software that supplies the server hosting (an easy option) or if not then you need to look around for hiring/paying for a server to host your site. I would start small with a shared web-hosting-based server as low as $5 to max $10 a month.
  5. The work begins, with installing your forum software, working behind the scenes on the server, and working in front of the house with your forum software. Can take days to weeks and so on 🙂
Or hire a person for free/paid to do it all for you 😛

It's always best to come up with a niche before looking into which platform you want to use. Once you have a niche picked out, then do research on what hosting you want to choose and which software you wish to use. Since you are a beginner, I highly suggest checking out one of the free forum hosts, such as jcink. I also suggest signing up and creating a test forum to get a feel for how everything works, before working on a live one. I picked jcink since it allows you to obtain a backup of your forum database, and as far as I'm aware it's the only free forum host that allows you to do so. This will allow you to move your forum to self hosting if you ever wish to do so. If you ever need help feel free to reach out to the members here, lots of us have been running forums for years now or at least have experience with maintaining them. Also remember rome wasn't built in a day and it will take time for your forum to grow.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is do you want to try to create a community online? It is way easier to do it on social media with something like Facebook groups or Twitter Communities. However, you basically "rent" that space and if something happens and you lose your community, there is nothing you can do because you agreed to that in their terms.

If you want your own digital real estate in the form of a forum, I suggest you buy a .com domain name which will be around $10 to $20, pending where you get it. Get it from a reputable domain registrar such as Name Cheap. Then, you need basic shared hosting which costs usually about $100 to $200 a year and you can monthly if you want. Again, choose a reputable hosting service such as Host Gator or Go Daddy. As your forum grows, you will need to upgrade to bigger plans and maybe even a VPS or dedicated server. This will cost more money. So with that being said, have a profit growth strategy in place. There is nothing wrong with earning a profit with a forum, even from the start if you can do it.

Next - get a good forum software. I'm pretty much a XenForo only user. It costs money and it is a lot to some but the features are amazing and the software is routinely updated. There are great free options as well including MyBB, SMF, and PhpBB. I started out using PhpBB 1 - that's how old I am.

Start touching up knowledge on the topics of cPanel/Plesk (whichever one your host provides), MySQL, and hosting. You don't have to be a developer level, though, so don't let it worry you.

Running a forum in 2022 is different than it was in the 90s and early 2000s! It is harder. More people are on social and remain on social and don't like to venture off the forums. However, social media and trust is starting to turn into an issue and forum owners need to capitalize on that RIGHT NOW!

It takes work and you'll likely post by yourself or with little members for the first year. Don't give up. Keep at it.

Once you do that, come back and ask how to get more members and market your forum and we'll be here to help you!

The most effective approach is to identify a specialty before considering your options for a website. Once you've decided on a specialty, conduct your research on the hosting services and software you want to use. You should definitely check out one of the free forum hosts. Before building a real forum, I also advise signing up and creating a test one to get a sense of how everything operates.

My best piece of advice is buy a domain and hosting and build a forum from free forum software like mybb, phbb, smf, etc. You can also use premium software like xenforo, however, the problem with using paid software is that you will be spending $200 per year on average. If you find the free software too difficult to use, try using wordpress forums.

Running a forum with premium software is really expensive. It is better to use a free script and use the money for marketing and content development, which otherwise would have been spent on forum script.
