I was just wondering how others here deal with moderators who become inactive on your forum. Do you de-mod them? If so do you try to contact them about it first? Do you leave them as mods?

I PM them informing them that if they don't become more active that they will be demodded. If that fails, then I demodd them and hire new ones. I hand pick my moderators though, so that is hardly ever a problem.

PM/Email as a slight warning to why they are not active enough or doing not such a good job. If they don't answer or pick their act up, then I remove them.

An email is normally what I do, but its best to demod them if they aren't interested in staying active, doesn't make your forum look good with moderators that aren't active.

Well, the first thing I'd do is to probe the reason they're inactive. Ideally, you should have people wanting to try and be staff on your forum. Not talking about your now but forums in general. If a forum has to "ask" members to be staff then there's something wrong already.

In some cases inactivity can be caused by say a Family Death, although most of the time I've found people get excited at the thought of being staff, and in realitity it's more work than they first realised. That's one of the biggest problems we've had with staff here, is that they're very enthusiastic about joining a leading promotion forum and love to "wear the rank", but when it comes around to actually doing some work is when the lame excuses such as "my internet got capped" or "My computer broke" start rolling out.

The process for dealing with inactive staff here is as follows: PM them, if still nothing wait a few more days, try to get them on Live Messenger or another IM. If still nothing, consult with Team Leader / Admin and kick them off the team. ~smile~

If the Moderator has been inactive for about about 2 days with no explanation, I PM them concerning the issue. However, some always say "Oh sorry; I'll be back tomorrow because I'm sick" or something of such. If they don't come back by the next morning, I ask the team leader for their concerns on if he should ban that inactive moderator, and then we can just demote him. It doesn't matter anyway because there's over 50 more members that want to be a Moderator, and I'm pretty sure they can do much more of a better job than the recently-demoted inactive mod.

Just had to demote a moderator for that reason yesterday...you just can't get the staff these days -roll-

I have had to demote moderators before . As much as I don't like to do that I usually write them a few times and have given them several chances . I feel being a moderator or Admin should be treated as a honor. They shouldn't get the recognition if they are not able to meet your expectations.
