I have hit the ground on this one. Keep in mind that I hardly ever get alienated by a member or staff, but I have no clue but recently I seen a critique that blew my lid.

This forum has the User Review forum, where users (instead of just staff) give their reviews to members of the forum who ask.

This staff member responded with a "critique" in response to another persons forum (Keep in mind that the forum being critiqued was actually the forum of the Admin who is running the particular forum the staff member is from lol). Anyways his response, ( I will not display, for secret sake) was not even close to being a critique in my mind. In my opinion, when you give a critique or criticism of the work in question, you have to give valuable information. So if you reply with it's stupid looking, in return you must offer up ideas of making it better.

So I ask you all in your "Opinions" what constitutes a good critique. Letting them know what you think, and not telling them (which in my opinion may alienate them), or giving valuable helpful information in making their forums better, based upon what you seen.

Everyone sees things differently. Your opinion is as wrong and as right as another's. It's an opinion.

It may help; it may not. However, without seeing what you're on about, I can't make a fair judgment as to whether the comment was "stupid looking" or not.

A good critique presents the judgment of one person. If you try and reflect too many people, you will surely end up "stereotyping" a certain group of people. A good critique presents a view that would help that user join that forum or bookmark it. With a combined effort, the person asking for a critique can grab a general idea on how this niche (FP for example) responds to their site.

However, ask the same thing on another forum and you will most likely get something completely different. Critiques are based upon past experiences. FP saw a theme change, from a dark skin to relatively light. Many users like this, and probably do not prefer the dark skin whereas prior to the new theme, they would probably have liked the dark skin a lot.

Anyway, a good critique provides information that will increase the possibilities of a site. If I were to say for FP, go back to the default phpBB3 theme, then that wouldn't be a good critique. If I were to say change the login structure to better suit new members, then that would constitute to being a good review as you're looking out for potential members.

🙂

Yeah I know what your saying, I guess I think when I look at it, is that I have to help them as well.

So if I say something isn't really working, I should help by adding a thought or two into the mix to make it work (if that makes sense).

So there is two sides to it. Saying what I don't like, what I do, and what could be fixed.. so three sides? lol

That forum needs members. If they can't get you, then that would probably mean they can't get 100,000 others who have similarities to you.

Sometimes saying what you don't like is really improving the forum. If the forum has popups everywhere, then you can say you dislike the popups, and that in turn, is helping the forum.
