I see a lot of forums that are very active for a period of time and then it starts getting inactive after that period. So what methods do you use to encourage your members to post? I think this is important to keep members posting and stay active.

Interesting new topics to discuss, posting contests and rewards for activity are the 3 options that come right into my mind when someone asks how to boost their forums activity.

I think they are great ideas. It's always important to give members something to do in your forum to keep them staying active and posting.

The biggest thing with any forum, which most forums that aren't exactly active or inactive, is the lack of fresh topics to discuss. That is usually the issue with members going inactive, is that there aren't many new topics to discuss, and they don't think they can bring anything new to discuss, when they could do that themselves.

People say that the staff are what keeps forums alive, but that isn't the whole truth, it is also the members. If members are going inactive, and yet the staff is trying their best to provide a good environment to post in, with new topics and posts to reply to, it isn't the staffs' fault, it is the user not wanting to participate anymore.

If users don't want to participate anymore, how do you think you can encourage them to participate again or bring new members into the community?

I agree with your first point that there needs to be new topics to discuss all the time to keep the discussion going but sometimes with forums even staff don't always create new topics to discuss which makes members less likely to participate in discussions.

new topics, yes...

but the environment as well...

new and fresh things going on all the time is a major plus...

giving new things a try is a risk that could be worth trying...

Topics which are mainly on topic and can develop into long conversations with a chain of replies really work the best. I notice most forums have yes/no or opinion and then go sort of threads but those that entice continuous discussion works the best.

Since this is a metal forum, potential members are persuaded by being told about our open-minded community and underground tastes.
