I recently tried joining Zophar Domain's forums, but I don't think my account will ever be approved because the forums are set to where only admins can approve new accounts and I don't think the current owner or admins have logged into the forums in a long time. That got me thinking, do you have admin approval set on your boards? Have you ever needed to set admin approval on?

I never used it when I was running forums. It was just another thing for me to have to do, and I've never really been a fan of the concept to begin with. The only time I really thing it's worth activating is if the site is getting a lot of spam accounts joining, and even then, I feel like it should just be temporary to help weather the storm and ensure that the legit accounts are getting through.

It is very inappropriate. Worse than that, there are forums that need the administrator's approval to post a topic.🙂

If you have the administrative capacity to quickly thumb through each new registration...then go for it I guess. However, most forums I doubt have this and if you're starting out all you're going to do is discourage people from joining.

I've done it when I experienced a flood of spammers who signed up. But even then it was very temporary. My opinion is that if someone who has legitimately intentions registers and is behind an admin approval, chances are high they will get discouraged from participating, causing you to lose that member.

So not, it's not done if you're intention is to grow bigger. However, many forums do it because they don't want new members and keep the forum online as an archive purpose.

We currently have it on Christianity Haven, but it's because our email is messed up. I have nothing to do with that, so I'm waiting on the owner to finally figure it out and fix it.

I have it set on one of the corporate forums I run because the owner insists upon it. The board however is monitored between 8.00am and 2.00am and as we only allow registrations from a UK IP people are generally asleep during the 6 hours the board isn't monitored.

Personally I dislike signing up to forums that require it because I often find I have make contact through email or Facebook to get approved. If you are going to do it, it needs to be monitored.

Normal times no, But if IPS spam defence detects something odd about that account, it may need admin approval. I do not have the staff or time to keep on approving new accounts and end-of-the-day IPS spam defence does it all for me anyway 🙂

SOme I understand why they do it, however as me joining a forum then have to wait for ex-amount after awhile of waiting I end up forgetting about and and never return

I do not have admin approval on. People want to be able to register and immediately jump in. They shouldn't have to wait however how long just to access their new account.

You don't get too many trolls then...or you don't mind the ones you get?

I feel about it the same way you do. Your account could take months and months to get approved. I fail to see the point in being active in a community that keeps people on a waiting list.

Forums vary in their setup, and sometimes admin approval is necessary to prevent spam or ensure quality interactions. In my case, I don't run forums, but many platforms do offer admin approval options for new accounts. It's a common practice in online communities to maintain a positive and safe environment. If you're encountering issues with account approval, it might be worth reaching out to the forum's support or considering other platforms with more active moderation.

I think it's necessary for some communities, ones that are very active and have had issues with spammers in the past. However, I feel like there needs to be at least one active staff member who has access to approve accounts otherwise people are going to lose interest. In fact, I'm probably not going to bother reaching out to staff via Discord or email since I doubt they still will approve me. The last time someone registered on the forums was early last year, which leads me to believe this is the last time staff has visited the site. (Or at least an admin.)

I’ve done it before as well, but it was only for a short period of time. I had to implement better spam protection features in order to turn the admin approval feature off.

I have admin approval turned on for one of my two communities. It's because only a certain group of people may join. It's not open to the public. So we have to validate each applicant to see if they qualify for membership.

For my small forums, I feel it's the best way right now.

It's the easiest way to prevent spam. I can look up the registrant to ensure they are legit and not a problem user.

This even works for a bigger community if you do it right. I have a hiking group on Facebook with 43,000+ members. It's really active. We get about 200 to 500 new members a day. Some want to join; some are just visitors posting on one viral post. I have a good, moderate team and chip in to review and approve new members. We work together really well. That's a must!

For now, I think admin approval is the best route to take.

Sometimes they respond fast, sometimes not. I tried joining TheAdminZone and it's been at least 4 hours with no response.

Update: It's Tuesday and still not been approved on TAZ... lol

The new owners of The Admin Zone don’t seem too concerned with building their community or welcoming new members. It’s been that way since The Sandman sold it, and it has completely gone downhill ever since.
You’re not missing anything.

I just wanted to view a few attached screenshots, but I can't without a full account lol.
