Gated content is a type of marketing strategy where you require action in order to access partial or even full content.

It isn't always good for SEO since search engines are gated from it.

If done right though, for a forum, it could be beneficial since we rely on membership more so than guests.

How do you feel about the gated content marketing strategy overall?

Just gated, that's how I would feel

If it make it gated, you are taking the trade off that many people will bounce after a visit or two since it’s all locked behind a membership. The issue then is that people can’t determine if the quality is good or bad, and to spend a few mins to register.

I don't really like it. Well, people signing up to access my lessons would increase membership, but it seems so forced.

There was only one forum that I actually signed up on in order to get information and that was when I had cancer and sought out personal testimonies from others who were going through the same thing I was. It was meant to be private and I understood that which is why I finally signed up in my hunt to know what would happen to me and how would I recover.

Other than that, I like the idea of the excitement of something really great hidden behind the gate but in reality I don't want to waste my time and get disappointed when there isn't enough to quench my thirst.

I'm not sure what this is all about. I've been on forums where you must react to a certain topic before you can further access it. Is that what you mean?

Not too into it and especially if its just a news article that Im trying to read and it wants me to make an account, you can forget about it, and I'll probably just avoid going on that site again.

I guess this would kinda count but I'm not exactly opposed to this, as I often only see this being done for forums' rules thread when a new member signs up - it's basically making them say "I've read and agree".

It depends on what that forum or blog is offering. If they are offering enough stuff that I'm interested in, plus, the pricing was good......I might be interested then.

I've always made all my sites free with no ads now-a-days. I did run ads at one point years ago before streaming blew up and made $200. But that took more than 2 years and it was a lump sum and really wasn't worth the effort.

Gated isn't bad if there are other places to post. A gated shoutbox is cool tho. If it's too gated no one would want to post anyways.

I guess it comes down to how you define and view gated content.

In marketing terms I see gated content as being a thread with a post and the inability to read replies until you register. That approach annoys me and it's not something I would do on my forums but I have no idea if it helps or hinders sign-ups.

What I do have on most of my forums which might be considered gated content is to have private sections for members. It's something that doesn't annoy me on other people's forums and I think it does encourage people to become members.
