I have a newer forum and I am trying to figure out how to get more members to post besides posting more topics myself.

What are some things you use to tell people about your forum?

I came to this forum as a result to winning a posting contest from another forum. I love contests and sweepstakes and the posting contests competition, this type of advertising gets me interested in being a member.

Advertise your forum wherever you go. Ask friends and family to consider joining. Keep posting a lot of exclusive content. Choose some useful keywords to rank high on search engines.

I'm in the same boat, trying to promote a brand new forum.

It's not easy, but constant promotion everywhere you go (where allowed) is the way to go. Bring it up in conversations with friends on messengers (but don't be annoying about it) and make sure people know your forum and its name/link. When they're bored or have time, they'll check it out and hopefully join.

It takes time, so don't get discouraged. Many people won't join new forums till they've been around for a bit to make sure it's a serious forum and is likely to last awhile. Once you show people that, you're going to start seeing more registrations and more posts.

I would like to know the same on how to get members and traffic to a new forum.

I have done all the usual stuff like going through search engines, signatures, promotion and so on but the forum I have started is dead.

out of curiosity does any think that the large use of mobile devices is the killer to this situation. years most had laptops and desktops but lots are now using phablets and so on,

If its a niche forum, try Twitter! I join Twitter using the forum name and information and start following people in that niche market, especially authorities of it. Then I favorite, retweet and mention them every chance I can whereas appropriate, people take notice in you giving them Twitter-love. I actually convert more member from Twitter than FB and G+ combined.

Really? Hm...

I use various forums, I have a Facebook page specifically for my forum, and I take advantage of services on these same promotion forums, such as post exchanges, package requests, etc. There's loads you can do to get your name out there, you just have to know where to look.

Find a co-admin. The topics and posts well get very boring without someone to talk to. Make sure you can get along with the person well. Then, your forum will look like conversations are happening, instead of empty threads.

Good luck with whatever you chose.

Some ideas...

1, Offer something that your competitors don't. Be different.
2, Advertise using social media Facebook Page, Facebook Groups, Twitter, Pinterest..etc
3, Get involved with as many forums you can to where you're able to have a signature for easy promoting. Be active, positive and professional.
4, Competitions, raffles where people can get a chance to win something.
5, SEO make sure you are search engine friendly so you can get organic traffic through major search engines.

advertising my forum on severeal boards
and also share it at my social networking

If you happen to have a list of boards that are okay with posting a link, would you mind posting the list here?
I just opened a forum promotion section at my own board, and I think it would be good if I could post a list with links to other forums where forum promotion is allowed.

If you want to get users for your forum then you must increase brand visibility for your site. If you want to target mobile users, I suggest that you invest in CPM advertising. You can do that on Bluagile's self-serve platform. You should check it out.

That's what I do. Allot of giveaways on my website

What I've done is post on other forums. Search for other forums. Some have ad places that are guest friendly, where you can post your ad. In return, they can post on yours. That also means you need a guest friendly ad board. Rewarding people for advertising you forum is nice too.
A big problem is that people just don't know how to find it. Some people have said they make multiple accounts, so instead one one member, (you) there are 5 or 10. What kind of forum is it?
I do rp, so it may be different.

I used to giveaway stickers, people loved them, and I recently forgot to order them again!

Well, I've forgotten for like a year now haha!!

Within about a month of launching a new forum, I've realized that the spark wears off completely. The original members who were very interested in the first place all get burned out, start lurking, and then never come back. Not even e-mailing them changes that. The only way to get in touch with them now is to text them or find them on social media.

I'm no longer sure on what other ways to attract new members. Google hasn't done squat for me at all.
