There are many things that can define a "bad" member, but here's a list of some examples:
—A member who breaks rules continuously.
—A member who flames, slanders, provokes, etc.

Those are the two biggest ones that come to mind, though I'd imagine I'm missing plenty that could fit here 😀

I have had some experience with a "bad" member in the past on old forums I was a staff on, but I haven't run across too many problems on my current one.

What about you guys? How do you handle it when a "bad" member pops up? What rules do you have set in place to deal with them? 😀

Maybe you guys are doing something I should be doing when such a person comes up! 😛 I'm interested to see the responses. <3

EDIT:
This is more so focused on when a member acts up. Yes, these rule-breakers do suddenly pop up as well, but I'm not saying they should be treated differently. But how do you go about approaching them for their actions?

I treat them the same as any other user, they get the same chances etc. But, most learn after a bit.

Well, I mean more with how you may punish them or address them on their bad behavior. I would definitely not support anyone getting special treatment (or lack thereof) for any reasons.

I usually warn them and if they continue to do bad things I use the ban hammer 😀

The ban hammer can be useful lol. Though, I tend to use a three strike rule before banning, varying on what the problem is.

Like, if they are harassing someone, get warned, then continue to do it? Ban. No three strikes for you.

Something small like double posting in the wrong sections? That'd I'd usually use the three strikes for. Varying on what happened, since sometimes it's really the browser being wonky that results in multiple posts. 😛

I generally tend to take both the action that's occurred and consider whether it had bad intentions or was just accidental (e.g. double post, wrong section).

Obviously, if a user is upsetting others, warning, then either post moderation or ban, depending on how serious it was. However, if it's just something minor, I tend to give two or more chances 😉

First, I kindly ask them to stop being rude.

Second, I inform them that if they don't stop, then I'll have to issue either a warning or suspension.

Third, I warn or suspend that member for a few days.

Last, if they still keep pushing it, I'll just ban them.
