I just keep posting as many interesting threads as possible. They're reading them all. Just have to wait to see if they're interested enough to say something.
I've tried all of these since (and before) posting this and I can't seem to get activity to go up on THMCC (link in siggie)... can y'all help me?
I'm not going to make duplicate accounts but here is a more in-depth look at what I've tried.
Posting more myself (I'm xriftingAway)
Getting my moderator (ex-co-administrator) to post more...
Contests/Giveaways
Post Exchanges from here and other forums.
Advertising on FB & Twitter... even paid FB to 'boost' my posts.
Moving from IPB to XF then back to IPB
Adding/Removing new features in the process ^^
Anyone have any other ideas. Nothing seems to work and I know this forum can work, I'm just doing SOMETHING wrong and I'm not sure what... Please help.
Some things I initially noticed that you can improve:
Condense many of your sections down into something more generalized; don't try to be too much too quickly. Activity should always come before diversity.
Find something unique you can offer, like a service and answer questions quickly. Find experts in the fields you cover to help you with that.
Raise the timeout for your online list so that it's not empty quite as often.
Get a favicon that's unique to your site, so that it's easier for people to recall when they see it in their bookmarks.
Post interesting topics
Get the staff to be proactive
Launch a $$$ Price Contest
Send mass E-mails and or PM's
Post exchange

I like the posting packages they offer. My problem is cliches and drama. I've stomped out the drama after seeing how toxic it was for a forum hoping to attract non Jerry Springer crowd but I'm still struggling with clicheyness. People enjoy posting on threads friends make and people They know but are less likely to post on new members threads that are unknown. I try to keep things going by bumping those threads up with new posts for them but it's a lot of work.
Yes I agree that Post Exchange and free advertisements increase your forum activity. I also would say to start your own topics that would interest most users.
It takes a long time to build a forum and a lot of work. It will not happen over night and if you get a quick fix way to get steady posters fast it's probably too good to be true. Put in the work and build up and you will be very happy with what you have accomplished.
I think you should promote your website at different places such as social network, forums etc and make enough content on your forum. I think the most important thing as you start off is build a big community. Once your forum has lots of posts and members, this will induce a domino effect and more people will join. Even if that means your initial memberbase and posts are paid, you will start getting organic traffic once your forum becomes big.
