For those who own forums where they are paying a hosting company to host their forum, how are you earning enough money to help keep your forum up and running? (ex. the web host, forum software) Are these methods effective?

I pay for everything through my own money. If I sell posts they are an extra so I can buy certain features for sites I run etc. It's a whole lot easier for me as i'm using Joomla, which is free open source CMS software. And the hosting only costs $5 per month or so and it does me quite well.

I mainly use my more profitable computer help blogs ad revenue to help fund my music forum which is ad free. I also earn some money from Squidoo which is a paid to write content site which pay users a few dollars a month to post articles depending on how much content and traffic you can generate for Squidoo. Swagbucks Papal gift cards also help out when I have enough points to trade in for Paypal gift cards.

I also use my own money when times are tough.

I sell VIP, Ads and occasional domains I pick up although some money comes from my own pocket now.

Currently I write articles, do comments, posts, and graphics.

;P

Not much money from those things.

I make a little online, not so much recently but I can afford to pay hosting out of my own money if all else fails.

I am funding my forum out of my own pocket, but I am only paying $10 a month so it's not expensive to keep my forum alive. Hopefully I can start making some money through my affiliates, it would be nice to earn some income from my forum, but its not my priority at the moment. Getting more content, and then I believe the forum will make money once we have lots of quality content.

I host game servers, look at the last few months donations statistics.
I make a goal, and we have to make a goal to be able to keep everything up and running.
We provide quality game servers that people enjoy playing on.
They are lag free, we have admins on all day and night at all hours of the day.
The community is well maintained and professional.
Now that we added AdSense and VigLink, well it's helping a lot now.

I don't really worry about it until it's time to pay 😉

This is usually the same for me. I don't worry much about money, so I can focus more on making money online.

I just make sure there is money in my Paypal, and bank account which can cover the cost of hosting and domains.

Lately it's been donations from loyal members, however I've recently created several plans regarding the financial aspect of my website.

Before donations, I was paying out of my own pocket.

In the span of a week I got two random requests of companies wanting to place a link on my blog. 10 dollars a month for 6 months (and 1 year for the other), just renewed the 6 month one, so 240 dollars from that. 30 dollars so far from ad sense... after my forum conversion and hosting and the license and support, it was like 300... so still not even.

All through my own hard earned money. My site makes no money, and I will soon be paying the bloggers when the site gets more popular. I go to work and earn my money for the site.

My day job helps fund the forum, I run ads but they do not make anything near enough to keep the running costs at the moment.

I have had a few donations - any $5.00 plus donations get a link at the website and will get a link at the forum.
