So how do you?

I think if you keep in contact with your staff through chatting over MSN,yahoo, your board..etc helps a bunch as it helps keep you all on the same page and the more your able to chat with them the better they get to know you and want to stick around to help get things done and have a good time.

How are you able to keep them active and working?

I would have to get there MSN or AIM and when they start disappearing i would send a reminder or have meetings on MSN or AIM every month or i would have to resign them.
But i think sending them a wee reminder every now and then is good to keep them active.

lol, well I guess that a stern and blunt way to do it.LOL

Don't get me wrong I agree hat it's effective and works out good, but I just think that it works out better when your friendly with your staff about it all as they'll know to keep doing their job and not feel like their being pressured and talked down to about it.

Mainly because I know the happier and more comfortable I am about things, the better I work.

Personally I think it's important to build a community where people want to be staff, then you significantly reduce the risk of inactive staff. The moment you start asking members to be staff is when you have problems.

So, how to keep the current staff active. Well, firstly I like to offer them something in return as an incentive to work for your forum. For example here staff members are given a permanent Affiliate in the footer for the duration of time they're on the staff. Additionally, some team leaders reward their members with FP Cash, posts on their forum or something else.

I also like to keep good relationships with the staff and I think it's important that staff members are happy with the team members they work with and the environment they're working in. Here at FP we have a very...how should I put it..."unique" staff room, there's always something mad going on in there - IMO it's a place the staff can go to and have a laugh in with the other team members. So in that respect, we provide that facility for team members to get to know eachother outside of their own teams. As for my Admin -> Staff relationships with each member, I have most team members on my msn. I find it's useful having people CarmadMike (my right hand man / eyes and ears)...and the other team leaders to discuss issues with the teams. Also by having the regular staff on my msn gives them direct contact with an Admin in case they want to dicsuss any issued they have with a staff member or want to make a suggestion.

At the end of the day, what's a forum without its staff? Not a lot. Keep them happy and you'll reap the benefits. ~cool~

That's exactly how I feel about it Murder He Wrote.I'm personally good friends with everyone on my staff team and I plan to keep it that way.

The friedlier you are with your staff the friendlier they will be towards the members, and more motivated towards helping you when you need them.

I can understand being stern with staff, but no staff member wants to work under somone who is extremley strict and could care less about having a friendly enviroment..atleast most staff anyways. ~_^

This is just my opinion on the matter though,as everyone has different opinions on how it should be done.

For starters; i never once ask somebody, "Hey, if you join my forum, and be active, you can be on staff"

I watch and observe members activity, and will approach them, and see if they're interested. And, so far, have had a 100% success rate doing that.

I have staff, who have been with me since the beginning (april '08), and others joining around last august, who have not missed a single day on the forum.

We've got a great, active community; and staff feel good that they're part of the staff team on that forum. Plus, we really don't have much moderating to do 😀 It's just helping the new members feel welcomed, and helping with any questions they have on getting started on the forum.

Yeah, I screwed up in the beginning.. but now I don't have a problem.

Well I'd hope not, asking members to be staff on your board because of a "Post count" they have is just ridiculous ad ignorant imo.Anybody on your staff team should be people who have been with you for a good amount of time,a good bit of knowledge on how to moderate a board, actually enjoy the theme of your board...etc

Just as you mentioned about your staff being with you for so long hcfwesker,I've done the same.I've had the same Staff since 07 when the board I have now was started, the only difference is 1 new staff member who was added the other day.

Although he had been with us since the beginning anyways...so he was basically staff anyways.LOL

i just think having a staff that actually enjoys the board or gets a say in what happens or is involved in the site is enough. when i make gaming vids i invite them to be in them. it makes them feel like the site is a part of them and that goes a long way in keeping them

I usually tie them up in a chair in a dungeon and have them watch a movie about burning bunnies, until the say uncle.

I only promote members if they hook me up with a hot chick, too.

Find way of making it competitive. This only works if you're good competition though.

So if you're not avtive, they won't be either.

Still giving everybody goals and helping them achieve them is a good start.

If you think about all of the most fun video games what makes them fun is a goal system that not only implements ongoing goals that replace each other when their completed but having a variety of goals going at once.

Give them goals that they can achieve just by posting. Give yourself the same goals then see who gets there first etc.

A good way to stay active, keep everybody active and have fun doing it -D- !

Trust me..... just look around this forum.

Especially take a look at Night's PKMN Box and Boss Jr.'s PKMN Box.

It's just in the starting up phases but features like this can keep posting interesting, competitive, "active" and most of all fun.

If they are inactive, they don't need to be staff in the first place.

I think having their msn addresses or yahoo addresses would be good as well. I usually send my staff reminders if they go inactive.
