How do you pick a font?

How do you go about picking a font, and how does your criteria differ depending on the project? For example, what would make a font good for a graphic, but bad for a website?

I have a dislike for Comic Sans as it gives me a children feel which is usually inappropriate for any board or correspondence (particularly when one is trying to be professional.) I do not recommend anyone use it unless it's in a day care or elementary-related project.

As far as graphic designs go...I go with the trial and error approach. Text is almost always the last thing I add in a design.

I really dislike Comic Sans or Times New Roman, they are both so overused today. I like seeing a font with clean lines and one that is easy to read.
