Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place, I don't know where else to put this...

I know exactly how to sell a website, but what I mean is, how do I transfer it over after it's been sold?

What do you do? I'm guessing you just take all of your personal information off and then change e-mail addresses?

But I reckon there's more to it. Can someone who has sold websites before tell me what to do?

Thanks 🙂

Well first off, you'd push the domain over the buyer.

Then you'd tell him your cPanel username & password where all the files are hosted. He's then responsible for moving the site/forum/files to his own server/host.

Websites...personally I'd download the public_html folder via FTP client, zip it up and then send it to the buyer removing any personal documents or anything else that may have been on the server.

Forums, download the forum's file system via FTP client and again zip it. Also take a database backup and send that too. The buyer will then need to create a new database, upload the filesystem, restore the database backup to the new database and edit the forum's database connection settings to connect to the new database.

It sounds really confusing lol.

Wouldn't it be easier to give the cpanel username and password?

What do you mean by Push the domain over the client Shotgun?

Giving someone access to YOUR hosting account isn't really a smart idea unless you really trust them.

Just do what Murder said. That's how I did it when I sold one of my old forums. I downloaded the public_html folder and a copy of the database then ziped it. That easy.

Also, he means transfer the domain to their account.

Well, if you're selling the hosting account with your site then yes. If you're not selling your host account with the site then don't give away cPanel access.

I just want to get rid of the whole thing, so yeah the hosting account too. The only thing is, will they get all of my personal information with that?

Such a noob at this, sorry!

If you want to get rid of the whole lot then as well as giving them cPanel access give them access to your account on the Web Host. You'll be able to change all of your personal information there - just replace it all with fake information and the buyer will be responsible for putting their own information.

Do this for the domain name too, wherever it is registered.

Domain name I believe will automatically change to their whois record, so no need for that I believe (well still best to check how the registrar handles pushes!)

Thanks!

The domain name is registered with the same hosting company anyway.

🙂

I dont know about the credit card details though. Usually you just get an invoice asking if you want to pay again this year. I'm not sure if you manually type in your card details every year, but I can resolve it with the support on the host.

Thanks!
