Well today, I had to restrict a user to our usergroup called "Inmates" due to editing my posts (in a childish way and not with quotes, either).

He is one of our best members, but he crossed the line..

How do you feel when you ban a member or restrict them from posting?

Do you feel any remorse or regret?

Moved to managing your forum.

I dont do that, I either ban them or not.

If they broke an honest rule where the consequence clearly states a temp/perm ban, then why feel any remorse?

On a previous forum of mine I used to run the forum for an Actor from Stargate SG1, and i have a crazy nutter on the forum who seemed ok to begin with, then they started getting angry whenever they visited and the actor hadn't replied. So she then started claiming things and saying to everyone that i had sent PM's to her and the Actor saying nasty things and that I had sent the Actor PM's from her accopunt etc etc.

Obviously i did none of what she claimed. I warned her that if she continues like this that i would ban her from the forum. I didn't exactly want to do that because it could make me look guilty. Anyway, the Actor decided to make a public post confirming that i had never sent him nasty PM's, and that no PM's of what she described had been sent from her account. The friends that supported her realised that she had been lieing and used their friendship to gain support for her and they turned away from her.

I thought that was enough punishment, but apparently not, she continued. So i banned her for good.

Yes it felt good..... 🙂

If you would have done the same thing to another member, even if he wasn't your best member, then you did the right thing.

He must have been an admin or moderator to have the ability to edit your posts. Demotion and then a PM regarding why would be the way to go, for me.

I'm assuming it is the Admin that you were annoyed with making changes to everything you changed, and then you demoted him to Moderator and he threatened to leave so you made him Admin again, then you spoke with him and he agreed to go down to Moderator and he is now Admin again.... where in this long saga of events did the "editing my posts" come in?

If users make annoying posts (spamming, flaming, trolling etc) I usually send them a PM. If they do it again, it's a warning. After that, I ban them from posting for three days. IPB allows me to do that through the warn panel. Next time, it's a one week posting suspension, then a three day account suspension, one week account suspension, and then a ban. Obviously if there is a significantly large time frame between the offences, it's going to make a difference. On one larger forum I moderated a user had 15 warnings, but he accumulated them over something like six years.

Feels like, just clicking buttons to me. They get banned for a certain reason end of the day it ain't getting judged by Judge Judy.

Nah..

I thought he was the one doing it, but it was my other moderator, Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus(or Ghost of Mayfield Lodge), he's unrestricted from posting, but he's lost his moderator position(Which means he can't edit my posts, but he'll still get access to the staff area, which will give him the illusion of being a moderator)

If people are constantly breaking your rules after you've given them ample warnings then you shouldn't feel bad. They did it to themselves.

You don't ban people... People ban themselves. If they break the rules enough to be banned then they have got themselves in the situation and in theory banned themselves. I don't really feel anything when banning people or removing peoples PM permissions or anything like that as it is their fault and they deserve it and their actions brought me to do it.

I don't know about any of you but I find the idea that someone enjoys it to be rather sad tbh. Banning people shouldn't be something you enjoy imo as it's one of those things you don't like doing but know you might have to do at some point.

If anything, banning should be a last resort and you should attempt to use any other means to avoid it if possible.

I do find it immensely funny though when you get someone with martyr syndrome. Obviously if someone is just being an annoying spammer, it's just clicking buttons, but when you get someone who goes out like a martyr - oh boy, that's amusing.

GO F*** YOURSELF ALL OF YOU! I LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WHERE WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. YOUR A$$H0LE MODERATOR EDITED MY POST FOR SWEARING - THAT IS ANTI-FREEDOM OF SPEECH. IMMA CALLING THEM POLICE, YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW! IMMA SUE YOUR ASSES!!111!!

I like those people, for they are funny. I often like to speculate on what was going through their brains. 😀

One of our staffers does something like that and they wouldn't even get one more peek into our staffroom. They'd be demoted totally, no halfway thing. There is no reason to keep up the illusion to either him, your other staff or especially your members and let THEM believe that it's okay for staff to do that and that they can get away with it without being stripped of rank. IMO it's best if you 100% demoted him.

Did someone really post that? The police would tell them to stop wasting there time

lol is that for real?

That looks like the sorta stuff I see people joking about on forums sometimes. I mean those kinds of posts.

Yes, it is for real.

So far no one has been that stupid on Hortorian, but that was from Be Creative. It was so hilarious that I saved it. 😛

I'm considering banning one of my members, because he violated one of the rules:

"2) No pornography allowed."

He seemed to go off the deep end.
