How far behind on updates for your forum's software are you? Is there a point where you're risking your site by not updating it?

Any software i use or code myself always try to keep it current and upto date, as development progresses with any software features and improvements to security and bug fixes help a lot which helps keep your software secure.

so yes i keep my software what ever i use upto date and current.

I'm always ben the person to keep software or just about anything updated. The only time that I do not update or may have to downgrade is if the patch is so bad and broken.

IPB, it's paid forum software and they always doing updates and keeping on the latest patch and security. Yes, you do not have to keep paying for your licence however you do not get the full benefits like security and software updates to IPB spam defence. If you own an old forum that has not been updated for years, you end up spending more money and time on other security software to run.

That's a really good question.

I think it fair to say a lot of site owners will tell you if it ain't broke don't try to fix it. On the other hand it's often the case that updates will contain security fixes. In recent times a lot of software automatically updates or makes it increasingly hard not to do so. I'm sure this increasing trend is ultimately the right approach because it means software companies only need to focus on a single release and it should provide better security.

It also goes hand in hand with SaaS (Software as a Service) because the burden of having to handle the intricacies of running a particular software platform is all done for you which in turn allows you to focus on the reason why you started running a forum in the first place, to build a community.

I'm sure there are still people around who still want their software fixed in perpetuity on a CD in a box and I'll freely admit I used to be one of them but the advantages of having your software updated automatically and in a timely fashion has to be preferable.

I'm currently up to date on both the latest version of Joomla and Xenforo. I think whenever my license needs to be renewed I might wait until major security fixes are added before renewing. Of course I don't have to worry about renewing until April of next year so I might just get around to renewing it right away. I'm on a Sonic forum that hasn't updated their Xenforo install since 2018, though I rarely see the owner online these days but there hasn't been any security issues as of late.

On my wordpress forum, I update to the latest version of wordpress and wpforo, the forum plugin I am using. My other forum is built on SMF and I have not updated it ever since I started using it. I am not even sure if updates are available for this open source forum script

I'm one of those people....if it isn't broke don't fix it kind of people.

Sometimes I'll only update if I'm forced to.

I usually update as soon as one is released since in most cases it will contain bug fixes or security patches. I also like new features 😛

Just one version behind, the most I've been is two or three. I try to keep it up when possible.

Mostly all up to date, unless a major release causes issues plugin or theme wise. Then I'll fall behind a few versions until the issues are resolved (although still within the supported minor release cycle).

I might get a few days without updating.

I try to have as few plugins as possible so that I can keep stuff up-to-date quickly.

But I used to have to wait as I would have tons of plugins installed.

I will wait a week or so before doing it, just to make sure if there any bugs they are fixed first.
