Topic title says it all. I think I did a fairly good job at writing up rules on the old Chatting Time, but now this one I feel I may have gotten carried away. Not only did I write rules, I also did kind of a personal FAQ about Chatting Time, like where the inspiration came from and all that. You can read our rules and my personal faq here: http://www.chattingtime.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=130 Yeah, I can tell you right now I got a tad carried away. I wanted to try find that thing that Fergal gave us at one time, but I didn't have much time so I just kind of threw something together. What are your sites rules? Are you good at coming up with rules or did you just kind of throw something together in minute's writing?

I had to do a terms and conditions page for a friend once. It almost took me a week. :O

Yeah, it's gotta be hard writing rules or TOS to fit the site. In the past, I didn't know anything about writing rules, and the only thing I could ever think of were about spam posting and about PM Advertising, and that was about it.

I try to keep rules really simply and then amend them as time goes on and things change on the forum. It's a good idea to have a note in your rules to say that they are subject to change without notice.

What thing was that Ashley?

Competition rules would be more difficult because if you miss something out, you're in trouble.

It was actually a while back, Fergal, so I can't remember too many details, and I think it was probably even on the BAF, not exactly here, but you had given us a guide as to how to write good rules in order to avoid a DCMA or something like that... Again, can't remember the details.

I'm kind of lazy when it comes to writing rules. I write down the basic, generic ones that most forums rules and throw some of my own that pertain to my site.

And usually I just amend them as I go along.

I wrote the 2 page TOS for an image host in less than an hour. 😛

Im no good at making rules up for a forum. When I was running a forum Id normally copy bits from other peoples and re-write it as my own.

Yeah, I have to write up rules and or find someone to help me 🙂

I think I'm quite good. I try to make the as short as possible while including everything I need to. I also always put that members should be responsible and that Mods have the right to remove anything that they deem inappropriate.

I can usually write a draft of a rules page in twenty-minutes to half an hour. I got a bunch of law classes two years ago, which really helped. However, as I usually end up submitting the draft to my staff team before making it official (to get their input and ideas), it can take up to months to get everything nailed down firmly.

Do you mind me asking where you did those law classes. I did the part time Diploma in Legal Studies at Dublin Business School a few years ago.

I have trouble to keep rules short and concise.

I generally write a draft about what rules I want to include first, and then I keep growing around them as I remember or think of.

For my forums I had to multi-post for sake of clarity. Then I changed all that extra info into a FAQ thread, which i plan to keep expanding over time. My community is weird enough to keep people asking or suggesting the same things over and over. XD

It was nowhere near that official, really. As part of a Transition Year program, my school got in a teacher to give us some general law classes, and I spent some time observing at Dún Laoghaire district court. It's not something I could really put on a CV, but it gave me some insight.

Having a sister doing a PhD in law helps though. ^_^

That's actually great experience DarkRaven and well done to your school for providing it. Your sister will obviously be a great resource for any questions you have regarding your sites.

I didn't even know that law school could help when it came to running forums, but I suppose it helps to take a class or two in the long run so you know exactly what's legal and what's illegal as far as running an actual forum. That'd be pretty handy.
