I keep trying but it seems to be very hard for me. My friends on Facebook are not interested in DJing and on the other dj forums they forbid people to post other sites on them.

Make blog comments on articles related to your forums genre.

Of course there are many other things you can do but the above will not only get you a extra hit or two (depending on the amount of comments you make) but can also be useful for SEO. 🙂

Edit:

I looked at your forum now and can list a couple of reasons why nobody is joining at the moment.
Also dismiss my advice on SEO as it is quite hard for a .com, .net to rank well depending on the keyword. I am not sure how or in what ways its possible to build SEO for a sub-domain

The reasons:

-very new
-no exposure (I don't think to many have seen a link around but on FP, facebook, etc?)
-not much content
-no logo
-what makes your forum as or more interesting then other forums about the same thing? :info:
-on a free host
-long not easy to remember domain (http://jonathan1990-dj-forum.forumbuild.com/index.php)
-default theme of phpbb...
-to plain, nothing that seems unique to me - stand out.
-is about you, better in the beginning is not to create a forum about yourself but about DJing until you gain some more fame in the DJing world. That is of course if you are a DJ.
- etc...

Thanks for the help. I have started work on improving my forum but there is a lot to do. Glad I found this forum as it's helping me learn a lot about other people who have forums. 🙂

On a free host is not an issue. There are many forums that are successful on free hosts. (Though there are also many measures of success too. So having all the members might not be success for one admin.)

Rather I think problems with your forum come from other aspects.

1- Your current theme/skin.
Bright red, yellow and neon green are not good ideas for colour combinations. They hurt the eyes and will cause most people to flee on sight.

Instead pick a neutral colour ( perhaps a silver like #DCDCDC) and then add highlights of a darker red (I rather like #A60000) or green (#008B00). Though I'd avoid blue and silver since many feel it's over done and you want to stand out from other forums in a good way.

2- Your forum's name.
Your forum's name is "Jonathan1990 DJ Forum" which basically tells everyone that this is all about you and your DJing. Which can turn people off because of arrogance (if your forum is presented like you're a master at DJing and everyone should bow to you) or self-serving (if this is all about you rather than DJing).

Given that you forum has a number of sections dedicated to you, I'd wager a guess on the second issue (self-serving). So you may want to remove your own name from the titles and convert this to be more about DJing. Give others places to post their mixes (like convert your "Jonathan1990's Latest Videos" area to maybe "Your Latest Video" section so others can post their stuff too.)

3- Too many ultra-specified sections.
Your "DJ Jonathan1990 DJ Times", "Radio Stations Joined As Jonathan1990" and "DJ Jonathan1990 History" sections could all be topics on your forum rather than sections. There really isn't enough call for a whole forum for each of them when at best they're going to have 1 or 2 topics then maybe a few replies.

I'd say turn some of those sections into more open ended sections.
Like turn a section into one for people to talk about other things like TV shows/movies and things like that too.

4- More content.
Always more content. You need activity to convince people to join and be active.

5- Be patient and persistent.
It takes a LONG time to be successful. (Some sites never see many members for months or years.) So you have to keep at this.

6- Use other advertising methods.
Twitter or social networks can help promote you and your site. Be sure to log in often and make updates.

Beyond that, good luck.

I think we should focus on the content, maybe 99% of posts are from user, but to begin with a forum, the admin or moderator should make the forum with some high value posts, this will attract users and get good rank in Google.

I have the same problem.....I want to have more friends on my facebook, but ...
🙁 not easy....

1. jonathan1990-dj-forum.forumbuild.com/index.php

Get a domain name. An info even. Costs 3 bucks. I can't remember that long link, but I might remember djforums.info (or whatever you find as a proper domain name).

2. You are BADLY hosted on a site that took 30 seconds to load your page. I would have left, but I wanted to see it. You have FEW seconds to keep a visitor focused on your site, don't squander it with bad services.

A hosting plan is around 12 bucks/year or close to this. That would show me YOU CARE and it's worth joining. Otherwise, you're just another forum owner who'll get bored in 2 months. A proper domain name/hosting might make someone else interested in taking it over, so the regular member doesn't feel he's wasting his time posting on a forum that's clearly NOT built to last.

3. The design is horrendous. You need light greys and relaxing colors. What I see there hurts my eyes and, unless I was paid to (and really well paid) post, i wouldn't bother.

4. You have no content. If I try to ignore the horribly long and illogical address (and probably bookmark your site, since I can't get there the second time) and my eyes are not popping out of the pain that green/red combination causes me, I'll probably look for some content. Which is almost missing. You need to start a forum with 40-50 ENTICING threads at least to make it work.

THere's more stuff wrong with that site, but I'd say you should solve your biggest issues: bad domain name (or lack of it) and hosting.
