Does it matter if a website's domain name relates to the subject of the niche? It seems like a lot of popular sites do have names that relate to their niche like ForumPromotion, StyleForum, and Petforums. Right off the bat you know what the forum will be about. However, a bunch of sites I visit also do not have related domain names but are still doing well. What are your thoughts?

I honestly don't know. Most new sites I visit are usually suggested or talked about somewhere else, enough that I know what the site is about.

Even with Google, there is a description of what the site is about. I guess it helps when remembering to have a related domain name. But even an unrelated one that is novel will probably stick in your head.

From an outside standpoint, I'd say the name has to either be eye catching or intriguing, or be about the topic at hand. If it's neither of those, would someone even be tempted to find out more? Obviously that's not always the case, because like you said, there are many examples of sites that have worked out just fine, so who knows? Just come up with something creative and it should work just fine!

Short and easy to remember is what I wanted in a name for my particular forum.

it needs to be short, sweet and to the point. Not to mention catchy too, to draw the attention of potential members/visitors.

It is always better to have a website name related to your website theme. It helps your visitors to remember your website and also helpful for search engines to know about your website by the name.

My forum has the word chat in the domain name, so right away you know it's a chat forum. Though now, I want to specialize and change the focus more, so I'm not sure if the current domain name will fit with the direction I want to go.

It's better to have a website name that relates to the niche, because it's easier to brand, but you can brand any domain if the name is catchy.

The first forum I joined had a different forum name and address. The forum name did reflect the content of the forum, but the address did not. And it was quite long too, with a dash in it. But the forum was quite a big one. I think the name do not always have to reflect the niche/genre of the forum, but should still easy to remember or catchy to invite interest. And preferably the same with the address so it's even easier to remember.

On the other site I don't mind strange website name or address if I feel comfortable with the website, though.

It... depends on what you're going for. On the one hand, a unique, easily brandable name is pretty important or useful for a startup or business or something, since people tend to remember such names more easily.

On the other hand, for more site specific sites, the name should probably be something that's logical... but completely non unique for the most part. I mean, if you run a site about gaming and call it 'gaming forums' (with a matching domain name), I don't think anyone's going to care too much about the specifics of the name.

For sure. In some way, either directly, or by audio association or feel, it needs to relate to the character and purpose of the site. Otherwise, with your advertising you almost have to put up an explanation. Commercially, the 2 need to correlate, as it helps to 'click' the site identity in people's minds.
