Do you think your forum needs to make money? Well, for me there is no point in running a forum, blog, or any kind of site if it does not make money. The site needs to make money for its own sustainability. If the site is not making money, how long will you be able to pay for the running costs from your own pocket? I have two fully functional forums and both of them make money (not much but they are able to raise their own running cost).

Yes. I had to close down forums because I could no longer invest time and money in them. I had to sell forums in the past. If you cannot monetize your work, one day you'll have to change priorities and it will not be high on your list.
I don't use premium forum scripts because I want to keep my cost low by using open-source software. It is very important that you keep your operational cost low.
