It is not important enough to really have to do for me all the time, but important enough so that I can cover all the costs I put aside for running the forum.
Not important to me at all. Since I work the costs are covered on my end. That said, I do like to reach a point where communities can be sustained by donations (and/or premium memberships of some sort).
Not important. I tend to use running sites as a way to create a portfolio which I then use to generate sales for my freelance services. So the actual forums themselves don't need to make any money. It would be great if they did but I am not too bothered.
Very important to me. No overly important where the whole entire site is filled with spam but important to make sure that I implement ways to make a good profit. If your website does end up becoming popular then you will end up trying to make profit anyways... might as well implement a system early to maximise profit.
I don't care either way, I am in it for the community. Money is nice however I would rather have a awesome community rather than a bunch of money. It's not really important to me, money is money, and it's pretty tight for most people out there so going into making a community you should know you won't be getting a bunch of money. 😛
For people who say they do it for fun, what is fun about running a forum and what gives you the incentive to keep running your forum regardless of downturns?

The community. I mean sure money is awesome and it's something you should always try to pursue, however when you legitimately care for the community, for the people in it, that is a payoff. To give members that sense of community that they might not have in their own life is the payoff, that is why I do it for fun, because I can help people through it. That's my payoff, and it goes further than money could.
