Do you tend to slump over your phone/tablet/laptop etc ? Or do make a conscious effort to keep good posture?

My daughter sits at her laptop while sitting on the couch and the laptop is on the armrest and her hands remind me of little dinosaur arms flapping away at the keys. I remind her often that she'll feel the effects later in her metacarpals.

Probably bad. lol. I know I did injure my back when I was in my early 20s. Paying for it now. I had the surgery to remove part of one of the discs that was compressing the nerves. Then I got a CSF leak, leaving me in agony for weeks, which resulted in a large lump on my back. I say mind your back people, because back surgery really is the last thing you want to have.

On saying that, this lump has been getting bigger and bigger. People are going to call me crazy for saying this, but my mum suggested that I go to a faith healer. It's one of those things where you're like "ah sure, why not, it can't do any harm, right?" I am catholic, so I suppose it wasn't THAT massive of a leap of faith. The healer knew what was wrong with me before I even told him. He was like "give it 4 weeks and come back to me" and I did what he told me to do in the meantime. It's been 3 weeks and the lump is almost gone. It was like it spontaneously halved in size one night and while it's still there, it's pretty flat and getting smaller. I am booked in for an MRI in two weeks time, but by the looks of it, it might be gone by then.

That's not normal actually. It shouldn't be gone that quick since it was continually growing and they were discussing an intervention. Hence the MRI to see what was happening. Make what you want of that one.

But... bottom line is that you only have one back, so if you are doing something wrong like bad posture, correct it. Make sure to build up your core muscles. I'm only in my 30s and suffered already. My cousin who is in her 20s had to have a back op too, but she came off luckier than I did. She's a dancer, but at the same time, her core muscles were weak. Something to think about.

That's awful that you have to deal with back issues. I have heard from so many people that back pain is worse than anything. What hurts my back most is when I go cycling and that's because I'm leaning over too much.

I really hope that your lump continues to shrink! You didn't have any meds for it? Just the faith healer?

There was nothing they could do for me. CSF leak is surgical, so medicines don't help. Initially, I was so sick, I couldn't even sit up. The pain would shoot through my head and I'd throw up. I was like that for about 2 weeks, being in the emergency room a couple of times. The symptoms of CSF headache are very similar to meningitis, so I had to have a brain scan and blood tests, etc. All was clear. Caffeine helps some, but that's it. I was basically taking paracetamol to help with the headaches, but pain meds generally have very little effect. All I could do was stay lying down since it was positional. Sit up, searing pain. Lie down = relief. The lump appeared in the 3rd week after the initial CSF symptoms and the headache has subsided mostly. I've had that lump for about 10 weeks now, getting slightly bigger all the time. It seemed to be growing up my back as well, not just outwards. My family doctor was like "You need an MRI to see exactly what is going on with this" but the earliest I could get was in 2 weeks time. That was a few weeks ago.

So this particular thing in general is a waiting game. They can hope that it goes away within a few weeks or months. Mine was doing the opposite, instead of getting smaller, it was getting bigger. Now, the last thing I really wanted was surgical intervention. I've read that in many similar cases to my own, it takes a few tries to fix it, and it can sometimes end up worse. I was very scared to be honest. So yeah, no meds of any real significance.

I'm glad you're getting better and it sounds like some really scary stuff!

Bad. XD I have a tendency to lean over to the computer or whatever I'm doing at a desk. Also tend to slouch when I walk too.

Terrible since I have Kyphosis (Shoulder curve) & Lordosis (Neck & Lumber curve)
Now have a herniated disc because of the lumber curve

Back braces and excercises do nothing to help, can in fact make it worse pain wise.. Now I take pain killers and do very light yoga stretches and twists. Also have deep tissue massage.

Yuck sounds very painful! I feel you, though not to that extant. I've had a bad back since I took a couple tumbles down the stairs. XD (I was going to the bathroom at night, stairs is next to it, pretty sure you know what happened there!)

Were you born with those conditions or did your body change over time?

Do you have a nightlight there now or at least in the bathroom?

When we moved to the house we live in now 5 years ago, I was afraid of the stairs being right next to the master bedroom but we had an electrical outlet right at the top of the stairs and put a small plug in nightlight there. It definitely was a worthy investment.

It developed in my teens, Docs say curve is not bad enough for surgery (rod in the spine)

I also have Fibromyalgia which they say makes the pain worse.

Oh no! So many people I know have Fibro so I feel for you! They need to come up with some type of cure for that.

Yea, for me it's not the worst thing I have. I've learn't to tolerate the pain, Pace myself. my worst illness is M.E which apparently can cause pain too. So I've got a real mixture lol.

I bet the fatigue doesn't make the posture any better either. I find myself slumping over toward the end of the day when I start slowing down so I just remove myself from the computer.

No it doesn't if I am sat, If it's really bad I have to lay flat, like this week. Although that's not good for my back either.

Awful. Technology has ruined our posture

Have you seen the standing stations for people working on computers at work instead of being seated? I know a few people who rave about them and say that they don't have back issues anymore. I couldn't stand for 9 hours.

Every time I see this thread when I visit FP, I straighten myself up lol

My posture is generally pretty good. I make an effort to sit properly, but forget after a while and start to slump. My office has adjustable-height desks, which I'll raise every now and then. But that starts to hurt feet + hips after a while. It is definitely easier on the back, though.

I hunch over so far when I walk that I look like a right angle.

I know, right! See, I did something good for the forum 😀

That made me laugh out loud literally. As long as you aren't leaning backward at a right angle.
