I was wondering how forum owners keep their members' information safe from being hacked. What are some red flags to look for in a forum or site? Is there anything members can do for themselves to keep their accounts secure?
What I do is not use my real name. I tend to keep my account barebones. I'm curious if there are other tips that we can utilize.

forum software does most of that for you built-in, Just have a good policy rules setup and follow it 🙂

End of the day if things break out and members or that person turns too you and making your day a poop day then remember it's not always your fault as that person/member can also click the wrong button and did it to him or she salf

Do you think activating 2-step for all members would be beneficial?

Or could it upset members who don't want the extra security steps?

Going to upset them anyway, for both sides not having the security there or having too much.

I have the security setup but it comes down to that person to complete them all 😉

  1. Retype password and email
  2. Password to enter when going into their payment and address information
  3. reminder every couple of years to reset their password or check if their account holds up
  4. Email activation - check your email to confirm
I have done so far what the Forum software allows be to do and IPB is good with that anyway with security - Yes there are addons that I can add. like with a tick next to the account name

Beneficial, yes. Annoying, yes as well lol Just wish we didn't need so many steps online.

Keep all software up to date. Use very difficult passwords with as many characters as possible, with a mix of special characters as well.

I don't encourage members to share personal details, I want my members to have human sounding name, but I don't ask for real name and real location.

As long as you keep the software that you are using up to date you should have no issues with getting hacked or the breach of anyone's data. I myself am the same, I will always put the bare minimum on my accounts on forums just to be on the safe side so that there is not too much there for anyone to get their hands on if the owner doesn't keep their site up to date.

I know many forum software as long as it is kept updated does have it all built in to protect your member's information.

Asking for minimal info is the right way of doing it. Plus, try to educate them not to use the same password on more than one website.
