WIth IPB you earn nothing, as soon as you think that you made $5 - It's gone again when you have to spend on the cost of running the site. End of the day most won't make money on hobbies anyway. I say that most people (if you added the poll) will say nope, made nothing at a higher percentage.
Right now, my community forum is generating enough to cover the hosting costs. As far as licensing costs, it's not there yet, but I'm sure with more articles, and activity, it will be there one day.
With forum? I think mine took like a year or so. With blog? I got lot of options in short period of time. I think for me blog worked out lot better than forum.

Because if you are willing to earn money by running a forum then you must be active because you have to respond quickly. You must have knowledge of your forums niche market. Need team like moderaters to check post and take action accordingly. I think forums need management and thats why its a bit harder than blog but when you start earning from your forums means its going popular now and many blogger will come to get some additional traffics from your forums.
Most of the forums I've owned have been pretty profitable but that's generally not because I've stuffed them with advertising, more because they provide some kind of service.
To expand on that I run forums which provide technical support on behalf of Internet Service Providers. I also maintain private forums that hold details of rare guitars for identification and insurance purposes. In both cases they provide finance that pays all the associated running costs and gives me a reasonable income.
In the past I've run forums for small groups of people such as gaming clans who have always been willing to contribute towards the running costs. In short I've been lucky in that for the most part I've rarely had to finance a forum personally even though that may have been the original intention.
In terms of the forum I co-own, it took a few months before we started earning any money through it. With the site I am currently working on now to open up, I am not as of yet earning any money from that but I am hoping to be able to at a later date when it opens and as I get it active.
I've never earned any money for any of my forums. I never really took the steps to try and earn money from them, though I feel that you probably wouldn't make much on a forum. Blogs on the other hand could earn you more money.
