Just out of curiousity, how many admins does your forum have? And do you think there's a use from this?
I really can't see a use of having more than one admin member in a forum.

I don't own a site anymore, but I think two is a solid number to have. If you prefer to work alone, then you can definitely get by with one. But having another person to share the workload with can help out!

But there still is a trusting problem...

That's why you pick wisely. Interview the person, get to know them. I wouldn't hire someone as admin that doesn't have a decent reputation, or a stranger.

For a forum, there should be one admin and several moderators according to requirement of a forum.

Until your forum becomes popular, I only ever see reason to have one. Once or twice I have started up a forum with a friend, but we always end up arguing about things, so for me it is not always the best route to go down.

Airsoft Warbox has two Administrators. Myself, and my good friend who is helping me with the forum.

With nearly a million posts, the FFF was operating with 2 owners and an admin.

Topics like these give me the goosebumps. I think part of the reason why forums are struggling to succeed these days is because admins aren't willing to do some original experimentation. For example, you're not going to find the golden number of admins to have in a forum. Each forum has a different theme and aim. And staffing will ultimately be very different for each forum.

I don't think forums are having issues because of not hiring more admins... I mean if anything the problem is more that most sites have troubles getting members to actually want to be staff. Being staff means work, a lot of it isn't fun and generally tends to be thankless. (Or at worst people will curse you out for doing your duty... Like if you have to deal with troublemakers.)

I think that each site has different requirements. For example a large self-hosted promotion board might need 3 admins (1 to handle technical issues and maintenance, 1 to handle managing staff and another to handle contests or whatever else). While a gaming forum might only need 1 admin and a few mods.

That stated a good general rule is that until you have 50 individual members, one admin is sufficient. Though this is only a good idea, it doesn't hold true in every case. And you have to account for what skills you have and what skills others bring to compliment your own.

On my site I have 2 admins total... Myself and a close personal friend. Though they really only serve as a consultant or emergency hand. Like if I'm going away for a few days and won't have internet access, I just ask them to look in on the site and make sure things are ok. So this way there is always someone with admin powers around in case something occurs. Which is a good reason for having another admin, it allows you to take time off and step away from your board so you don't get burned out as quickly and still have the peace of mind knowing that someone is looking out for it.

Another good reason for having another admin is division of labour. Since if you have a second (active) admin you can get them to do some of the work you would otherwise have to. (Which if you play to your strengths means your site will be better off. Like if they enjoy doing graphics and can create skins/themes then they can handle that while you do some promotion or whatever is your job.)

Admittedly though getting an admin who will do the work is extremely difficult. A lot of people want the title and "glory" of being admin on a site but aren't willing to work for it.

The less, the better. Unless your forum is receiving substantial amounts of traffic and has a tremendous userbase, stick with only one administrator. This has always worked for me.

having more than one administrator around is actually quite useful when you own a very popular forum....

but thats just stating the obvious

its tough to hire admins though, its better to let it be someone you know in life than someone you never met over the internet... but yeah

There's just two of us, but that's fine by me. I don't need ten million people helping me out...just one or two is plenty.
