Some people manage to run two, there or even four forums!
That sounds really fascinating, but I think 1 or 2 of those
would have to be largely running themselves, with monitors
and a healthy user base. 2 Infant, unpopulated forums I think
is a handful, and more than that would be too much in my
opinion. what's your experience?

It all comes down to hard work and dedication, if they really feel the need to have more than one forum and are willing to put the time and effort to running each of them then more power to them. I've owned quite a few forums at the same time, though I felt that I couldn't really focus on all of them at the same time, and well I stopped working on them. Some people are able to run more than one site at a time, but it's just not for everyone. I recommend that website owners just stick to one site until they really feel the need to open a new site. 🙂

at least 3 (if they're active and big) or several if they're just starting out/don't have too much content to manage. It depends how workload there is on each forum.

try not to handle too many though, might get pretty hard. 😛

I don't think it's something you can put a definite number on, as many as they want. If they can delegate the daily running of the forums and simply oversee then I guess it can easily be in the dozens, especially if most are self functioning forums where very little work is required in terms of promotion and moderation.

I believe if you are directly over the site and what happens, one as it should have your sole attention. However, if you are in a network and oversee a team of site managers, you can run however many you want as your not really running them.

I have a single forum, as far as I see, today this is the maximum number I can manage.

One. It's best to give your all ya know! So...
it's my opinion anyway.Even though I have two forums >.>
