Title says it all, how many forums, should a new forum have 1-5 or 5-10 depending on your type of forum?

On one of my new forums, I actually just had one public forum in order to avoid diluting the content across a large number of forums although, I created more forums within a month or so on it.

Perceived activity is fairly important as potential members might just take a look at the forums, see that it's inactive and walk away.

Honestly it depends on the niche, Administrator, Staff, and Members.

Some forum genres require many "default" forums such as webmaster forums require "Web Development" or something similar to that to discuss how to manage a forum/blog. On general discussion forums, you always need a "General Chat" forum for general chitchat.

Administrator: If the Admin is dedicated, he/she will constantly post in different forums, so having more forums with more content could be great if you're dedicated. If an administrator is not dedicated, there will be many dead/empty forums present on the board that will turn off members or guests.

Staff: Have staff around with many forums is a good thing because it gives them something to do. Staff with few forums may increase the boredom of the staff.

Members: A forum with many members should have many forums to increase discussions and focus on organization to be specific. A forum with not as much members should have few forums as there may be many empty or dead forums.

So honestly, it goes by your judgement, if you feel your members can handle the amount of forums and increase discussions so those forums aren't dead, then go ahead 🙂

Hope this helped.

Thanks guys for the feedback, Ill remove / add forums based on members 🙂

I would not say there is a set number at all. It really depends on a few factors: how many forums you need (different genres need more or less forums); how quickly you can fill these sections up; and how much discussion can actually happen in those forums.

Honestly, I cannot put a number to it but as long as all sections are active and not over crowded to your members then you should be fine.

I think minimum 5 even for a forum that is starting out. The selection and pitching of those is a thing of great importance, as it's all about knowing your market and playing the game of supply & demand.

I say it really depends on the niche of the forum. If it's a video game forum, there should be a forum for each current gen console, including PC gaming and a section for retro consoles as well. So that alone would equal out to be around 5 forums, of course a site information section should be added and that usually comes out to be around 2 forums, finally a off topic section should be added so that equals out to be around 8 forums or so. If it's a general discussion forum, more forums should be added say around 10 or 11 to try and cover every possible subject. Overall like I've said, it really depends on the niche.

I would say it depends on how many areas you have of the forum that you are able to get content into when you open up. Having a forum with a lot of areas but no content in some of them does not look good to people finding your forum.

Keep the areas to a bare minimum until you are able to build up content in those and then increase as you feel you need to.

I think the niche should determine the number of forum categories (or boards) you have on your forum. Normally I strive for 6-7 boards.

I feel like mine has the right amount for what it is for now! Unsure exactly how many, depends on you IMO.

I think a new forum site should have 10 forums or sections for a start. As they grow, they can add more sections. The biggest forum in my country has up to 90 sub forums.

Start with small and then you grow and add more as time goes by. I mean you are able to come up with names. DO not want to go big as you want to keep people/members from scrolling to far. you can add as many sub-boards though

Consider your niche and pick forums that you want to make your core. It could be just 3 so that the discussion can be more concentrated.

When creating a site, I usually follow the philosophy of starting small and expanding over time. I started an old site with way to many forums and within a few weeks, I had to move and remove a lot because the forum did not look like it was active.

I don't feel there's a magic number. You want enough to have interest & to have topics categorized yet on the other hand, you don't want to have so many different ones where it feels overwhelming.
I'm of the mind you can always add in more later.
