How many global mods does a forum need? I think it depends completely on the size of the forum, but generally, I'd say something along these lines:

Under 50,000 posts: 2-4
Under 1,000,000 posts: 4-6
Any higher: 6-8

Of course, it depends on how fast your forum is growing, but I think any forum could do fine with 4 or 5 active moderators.

It depends on the daily post rate of the forum. If your forum is getting 1000s of posts daily, but only has a few hundred thousand posts, you'll need more moderators than if your forum has a million posts but is only getting a few hundred posts per day.

It depends on the activity the forum gets. I think instead of measuring how many posts the forum has, you should measure how many posts the forum gets. This is my view:

Below 100 posts daily: 2
Between 100 to 300 posts daily: 2-3
Between 300 to 500 posts daily: 4
Over 500 posts daily: 5-7

However I think there is no harm having more moderators than you need.

I think you need as many moderators as your community needs. If you have one moderator and they're not able to cover/deal with all the work, you get another one etc etc.

There can't really be any sort of "number you need" because some communities might require a hell of a lot more than others. A forum this size might need hardly any while a forum half this size might need heaps. All depends on your members and the community in general.

I'm not sure whether there's such a thing as too many GMods, actually. As long as you can have good people to fill the roll, then all you have is a more active staff team. The problem is, though, that it's hard to find enough good people to fill a very big staff team, even on a large forum. I guess, as Luke says, it depends on the type of forum.

I'm also fairly interested in forum-specific mods, though. It's a good way to test out whether people would make a good GMod. 🙂

Wouldn't you want to base that off activity level (not post count)? Any forum that has been around for a long time can get to 50k, 500k, 1 million posts and can still be relatively inactive in present day times.

Anyway I suppose it would depend on your group of members. Some forums have lots of drama-trolls and need lots of moderators to keep things under control. Some forums are peaceful most of the time and don't need babysitters roaming around constantly. So, I'd say there is no right answer for this question. Its different from forum to forum.

Definitely, hence why my posts was more of a "rule of thumb" kind of idea. It assumes exponential growth, or at least linear growth.

You're completely right though. It's a tough question to answer without knowing your community and being involved with your moderators to know how they feel about their workload.

I would agree with you pandaa, my forum currently has a couple of Global moderators and it is doing great! 🙂

It depends on the size of the forum. A forum with maybe 100 different users or so posting daily needs atleast 3-4 moderators especially if their not all on at the same time. A small forum will only need around 1-2 maximum global moderators

Technically, I have a ton of mods on my forum, but in reality, I have none. There's nothing to moderate, really.

It all depends on size of forum, daily post amounts, and if your forum member are more rude than polite. If they are polite to one another, then there is not need for a ton of mods.

I think if its a big forum maybe 3-4

but if its smaller 1-2 would be fine
