I don't think there can ever be too many. If a user has made a large contributation to the forum then she/he should be added, and not denied because there are say, already five VIPs. Also, if you make someone feel special or something on a forum...there's a higher chance that they will stay a member on your forum 😉
That's true. I guess unlike staff members, you can have about as many VIPs as you'd like. Heck, you can even make everyone on the board a VIP if you choose to, although if that really did happen, this would probably be the first forum I've ever seen where this happens. Most forums you have to EARN the VIP position, and everyone does things differently.
If people pay for VIP then there shouldn't be a limit but if people must earn the rank then it should just be given to real contributors and ex-staff members.

It also depends on the size of the forum. If the number of VIP's are a high percentage of your overall members then it will make being a VIP not as special and being a VIP will seem normal and not special. I personally don't believe in allowing people to buy a VIP rank. By all means give them a special donator rank but not a VIP rank. Just because you donate, it does not make you a very important person in my opinion.
Fowler your pretty right there. I mean I could scam some money on a site use that money to pay on a big forum that offers paid VIP membership. And I would be seen as a good person or popular person with a other color. I would also have more attention but actually be a bad person.
And when you got to earn it people get to know you better, and eventually know you so good you made some new friends or friend. Then when being VIP you are really deserving it and your most of the time a reasonable person.
Depends. If your VIPs aren't all super active, they shouldn't be there. As long as these people are a special part of your forum, it doesn't matter how many there are.
If I'm honest, I don't plan on having a VIP group anytime in the near future. I'm a member of a large forum that has a large member base. The administrators there created a thread (I think they regretted creating it in the end), asking what people liked, and didn't like about the forum. It was really interesting to read the comments from the users, the top complaint (and this was mentioned by a LOT of people) was how certain people were in a VIP group and this really annoyed the "normal" members of the board, as they felt that the VIP members were favored and treated as more important than the majority. It was a very interesting perspective that I'd never really thought about before! Maybe I'm over thinking the situation a bit too much, but I want to treat everyone as equal 🙂
