How much benefit comes from a custom theme?

Is there any real value in a 100% custom theme? It seems like a massive outlay of capital compared to a premium theme from the likes of PixelExit et al. Has anyone seen any intrinsic benefits from the investment in something unique?

If you're going to be running it as a business, then at some point, having it look totally unique is going to help you build your brand. If it's a forum for fun, then it isn't a good investment in my opinion.

The only one site that is using it and no other site that has it 😛 that's how I see it and also you have control over what you want to add or have and whatnot.

I agree. A well designed logo is a far better investment than a custom theme in most cases. Many of the busiest forums in the world use the default theme that comes supplied with the software.

People will definitely recognize a logo before they remember what theme a site had, in my opinion.

I think it helps a site stand out more and offer something others don't in certain looks.
