How much chatspeak can you handle before you start taking the poster less seriously?
I have no problem with abbreviations (lol, btw, brb) and use them sometimes myself. I don't think they're especially intrusive and I assume that most people know what they mean, but lately I'm a little worried as to how I'm coming across on the other end.
What does annoy me is when people shorten words (srsly, ttly) and I only do so when joking around with friends, or when I'm in an online game where I have very little space or time to type. I know some people type slowly and want to save time, but taking shortcuts will not get you any closer to being able to type quickly and correctly - and I think that should really be the ultimate goal for anyone who intends to try to communicate with others over a computer.
Also: this one isn't exactly chatspeak, but I get thoroughly annoyed when people use more than one exclamation mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Likewise, is it really so hard to stick to one question mark???????????? And more than three dots at the end of a sentence just distracts me from what you're saying............... Basically, you're drawing attention to the text instead of the meaning, and that makes your meaning seem weaker.
Possibly the worst thing is when people simply slap out sentences without looking and expect people to decipher it on the other end. I don't expect anyone to be an English professor, and I don't claim to be one, but people can tell when you're just being lazy and not trying at all. It's really inconsiderate and rude. Usually, the excuse is something along the lines of "I'm allowed to type however I want"; and at first, I found this statement a little hard to argue with because it's perfectly true. The problem is that when you're trying to get a message across, you need to consider how others are going to react to your post - if you act like you don't know good english, it's reasonable for me to assume you don't. It's then unreasonable for you to get mad when I decide that either you're five years old, or you sleep through your english classes. By typing especially badly, you're also distracting from your message, and that's just cheating yourself. (But to be fair, you can get the same problem if you use tons of long, little-known words and muddle the meaning of your post that way.)
Whew. Sorry if this turned out more like a rant against chatspeak than a question - I do want to know how much chatspeak you guys can tolerate, and which kinds. But some people's posts make me want to go put a cold compress on my eyes and take a nap.
plz plz plz purdy plz no flamign!!!11!
