How much does your hosting cost?

Cost is not really a fair proxy to measure across hosting plans. Some people may host on a dedicated server or VPS, while others may just need a simple shared plan. For people running on a VPS/dedi, they might also need to pay for licenses such as cPanel and other services. On the other hand, people running on a shared hosting platform might have different specifications like disk space, bandwidth, scripts, etc. that will vary their price. Some providers may also give a month free if paid on the annual term.

These are just a few things to think about! Anyhow, it's interesting to see how much money is invested into your site, and also compare it to what others are spending 🙂

I paid $358.20 for 3 years of hosting

VPS or Reseller?? And did you pay for 3 years at once?

My hosting costs $10 /mo (very small reseller)...

shard hosting, VPS would of cost even more, but depends on who you go with

I do know the cost of hosting.... 😉 So you paid $25 /mo for shared hosting? That would be a pretty big rip off unless you were getting guaranteed CPU/ RAM.

That sounds much better. 🙂 But why pay for 3 years upfront? When I ran holderhost, we never offered more than a yearly plan just because there are so many risks for both the client and host in a longer term.

It was the cheaper way to go at the time when I got it 🙂

I host my own server somewhere. Probably still have to compute my overall spendings to keep it running.

However, I did manage to grab a one year worth of hosting from NameCheap yesterday for only 98 cents. Not sure what to do with it at this point though. I think it'll end up being used for the domain that I also managed to snag for 50 cents... but I still need to design a nice landing page for it. The host should be able to handle the exposure since it'd going to be an extremely niche website.

I've been considering putting up a new site and forum again (after five years) so it's going to need a server outside my own. It's most likely going to be Linode starting with 20 quid per month and watch how it matures then adjust from there.

From the top of my head my NameCheap shared is like $30/yr, my VPS is $15/mo, HostWinds is $11/quarter and HostTheName is $13/6mo.

Why so many different places to host?

I never offered anything above 1 year myself. However, I do know several people that do pay 3 years in total just so they don't have to bother with the billing for the next three years xD

Of course, I would never pay anything above 6 months in advance if the host is a new host and has not been around for a while. If I would go to pay 3 years in advance, I would see that the host has been online for more than 6 years.

I'm on a hosting service for 10 years (I think). And it's definitely true about I got three years, so that I don't have to worry about paying yearly. However cheap host? Ummm, they gotta be rubbish if they are cheap lol

I pay quite a bit. I run dedicated servers so for that side, it is over $200 a month. I also have many domains, well over a couple hundred dollars a year for them. I pay for a few different secure domains (https) and security certificates as well. I'll probably end up making all my sites HTTPS pretty soon as that is the current trend.

I probably spend thousands each year, haha. I don't ever make it back, not even close. But I enjoy doing it and everyone needs a hobby! 🙂
