How much space should the logo take?

It's helpful to have one for branding, but they should be minimalistic and not get in the way of much of your dynamic content. The content is the product far more than the site is.

Might keep the size of the image but compress it

On my forum: http://basslesson.us it takes up more room than before, but there is still empty black space.
It doesn't really matter how much space the logo takes up. The logo on FP is only 330x75 and your one which is 383x142 which is actually bigger. The amount of space it takes up is not important, the important thing is how good it looks on your website and how well it blends in it with the theme. Personally, I think the logo doesn't blend in very well with the theme as it just feels like an image on top of the header as opposed to a logo. Also, maybe you should remove the "covermyfb.com" text as people may think it is a copyrighted image.

In both bases, I see the image as more of a header image than a logo. In that case, on drumlessons for example, I feel that the image should take up the whole top area from where it starts now over to the home button.

Should the basslesson logo take up the whole area on the top?

I try to keep logos a reasonable size but still noticeable. I usually keep logos on the left side of the header.

All I care about is the content so a big flashy logo can be a turn off.

Those aren't logos, they're banners. That's part of the reason that you're thinking... "hey this doesn't look right."

A logo is a small graphic, or text that tells us what your site is about. It's something people will recognise when they go to your forum. FPs logo is fancy text, our site's logo is some custom text made by ourselves. It could be a small graphic icon if you wanted. It might even be worth getting a nice logo commissioned from fiver or something

I don't necessarily approve of fiver for businesses, but for websites and things like that, it's great!
