Not often in my experience. I only got 20 US dollars via my Paypal e-mail for teaching someone how to recovery their files by booting to a Ubuntu Live CD when their Windows OS did not boot.

A few years back, I got $120 bucks for selling web hosting to help support my website.

I feel some people are less likely to donate if they see ads on a forum or website since they feel you are already making a substantial amount of money from affiliate marketing, Pay-to-click ads, or by selling products like T-shirts, and other merchandise to support a website.

Begging for donations to help pay for web hosting and domain registration does not seem to work in most cases. I guest a few family members, very close friends, and online friends might donate out of kindness.

I wouldn't really ask "how often" though. They would really want that something special that your forum delivers.

I know on another forum I am on, there are ads almost every where you look. For a yearly subscription of about $15, you can remove all those ads and receive a few more incentives. This is quite a large forum, and one that helps users, so users have reason to go back and they would want those ads removed.

If your forum provides some service, something special for users to experience, then they would usually have the heart to donate, providing you are targeting the right audience.

I remember that Digital Points which is a large SEO, internet marketing, and Eccommerce related forum has a subscription service which raises the amount of links to 4 links you can post on your signiture and come with a few other features compared to the free memberships.

It seems like a good deal if you use DP for getting customers, and promoting your E-commerce websites.

The incentives at DP are very promotion based. You get more noticed and 'appear' to be more trusted, so people tend to buy from you, or read from you etc.
