I have off-server backups taken every hour for anything on there, stuff does happen and it's great to know that if it does you can always fall back.
The thing about having it automated is to check often just to make sure that the system is actually doing it.🙂
Some of my backups are performed by the site owners I work for and also by me where possible.
On my personal sites I always have at least three local data backups spaced at 24 hours, 1 week and 3 months. I also manually create a local before and after backup of the software installation every time something gets changed or updated. If the worst case scenario was to occur I would lose 24 hours of content.
The database backup is automated but I do check every once in a while that it's happening plus I also ensure that the backup will actually restore. I've seen so many cases of backups that fail to restore for one reason or another that's become a bit of an obsession with me.
I auto backup a lot of websites but at least once a week, I backup myself to 2 external hard drives. I made this a habit with my video footage so I try to do it with everything including forums and blogs.
I have a full auto-backup each month (every 30 days) that does everything. However, it has happened once that the site pooped itself at one time and then after a couple of hours the full auto-backup started ;( Rippppp Xd, I was saved when my host had the backup files from before and they sent it to me. Just hate when backups start doing it at the wrong time.
Regards database, I have a Cron job setup that backups every 24 hours, So that new content is always will shell be backed whiten in the day. Does anyone else have Cron-job setup for their backup or whatnot?
I do not do a manual backup unless something goes wrong and I might do it myself by downloading the files/folder to my system. Does take forever to do your own Xd. Plus the bigger it is, the worse it gets. All up I'm allowed to have 20GB backup allowed and I'm way under that easy 🙂
I learned a lesson not too long ago. About backing up stuff. And it scared me to the point to where I will waste a day manually backing up lol just because of battle wounds.

We have all been there 😛 I did wrong many years ago to do a full backup of the server and keep the backup folder on the server and made the size on the disk larger 😛 and by increasing the size max above the allow monthly backup
I have my site set to automatically perform a backup every week and save every single copy of them into my server, and I'll then download them. I will take a manual one every so often too but most of the time I rely on automation to save time.
