Even small rule changes can have big ripple effects. How do you decide when a rule update is necessary, and how do you roll it out without disrupting trust?

For me rules are added or modified if/when problems arise that make me add or change the rule. However, as a general rule of thumb, I try to put all the major things in the rules from the very beginning.

For Christianity Haven, I asked the site building team to have very minimal rules. I told them that my reasoning was that I came from a forum where there were just too many rules for members to remember, as well as separate rules for EACH forum within the site! That was too confusing and I wanted simplicity.

We learned later on that being simple has its problems so we made an addendum later on saying:
These rules are subject to change at any time without notice. The Owner, Community Team and Moderating Staff reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any post/thread or ban any user for any reason

@Katrina Would it be okay if I use your addendum on my own forum?

In the past, I've only changed rules or added rules if something came up on the forum that forced me to make the change or addition to the rules.

Feel free!! It's really something we can fall back on if a member is being disruptive, but still curbing the line of rule violations.

I don't think I've ever really changed rules once I've set them up.

Is that because you had enough rules when you started it to begin with? Or just never had the need to as of yet?

Had enough. It's a matter of using common sense if people don't have that then they shouldn't be on my forums.

I try not to.

I try to keep the rules to a minimum and use terms like "Use common sense" to be a catch all for most problems.

I think too many rules will kill the community.

I update rules if a situation arises where new rules need to be added. Otherwise, I leave it alone.

I only ever change my rules to comply with changes to the law.

As I've said before forum members never ever read rules anyway. Their only real use is to set guidelines for consistency when moderating.

I don't change rules much, in fact I did only once to state "No AI generated content"

Rules should only be updated when needed, anymore and it just makes people not happy with your community.

Forum rules don’t need constant changes, but they shouldn’t stay frozen either.
A good approach is to review them every few months and update only when new issues appear, like spam patterns, conflict trends, or platform changes.
