I think a lot of us are quick to ban the viagara and condo spam trolls, but how quick are you to ban a new member who is a little odd or posts a link to something (if you don't allow it)?

For me as soon as I see it. Which is normally quick because I'm always online.

What things do you look for that would prompt you to ban?

For me, it depends on the offense committed. If they just committed a minor offense, then they'll just get a friendly reminder via the PM system. To me, a minor offense would be something like posting a image in your signature that is too large when you have a size limit on your forum. I wouldn't ban for something like that. However, if someone is committing a major offense, then they will get a suspension at the very least. They will probably end up with a ban if they continue to do it, even after you've warned them against it. Something like, harassing other members of the community would be an example.

Well I look to see if it’s related to section it’s posted in. Next I look at the content, is full of information, and is it going by the rules and guidelines that I had created. Has the member sustained any warning or infractions recently and what were they. Has this user posted similar in the past.

When I'm online at the time when I see something that has been reported or an alert has been detected. But lucky to get it once or twice a year 😛

With IPB it gets stopped without doing anything

What if a new member makes a post that doesn't quite make sense, has a link in it that directs you to a site that sells something and the language is just odd. Do you brush it off as being a foreigner and let it go? Or is it a troll and you ban?

I would give a friendly reminder

I don't usually care too much to ban someone, unless they've really pushed my buttons like someone from FP coming in for the sake for making dozens of "hi", "lol"
and "+1" posts which I consider to be spam.

Just be respectful, polite and use common sense and things will generally go alright.
If you're in a bad mood, then go take a walk or something, that always helps.
I'll usually be tolerant of a troublemaker for a while, although they'll know of my dissatisfaction and once they break that final straw, they'll simply disappear one day.
like posting a image in your signature that is too large
I'm on the fence whether to implement signatures at all, they can be a little on the spammy side. It's like... You go on a forum to talk to other people about what you're passionate about and you're immediately confronted with an advertisement under every post.

Often times, a profile link or a forum for people to promote their things in suffices.
Some sites even leave a little promotion area as a perk for regulars.

You can tell right away by checking the IP and email address, if it's spam then that user wouldn't even get to signup. But if you forum is English only then it's pretty much. But depends really to what the site he/she joined

sometimes I do ban them asap especially if they look like a troll or just messing around.
But if their replies are related to the topic or at least showing some respect as a new member
I do give them a chance and observe some more.

I usually try to give most IPs a chance, as sometimes bad apples or viruses spoil the bunch.
I do have algorithms for automatically denying certain keywords in emails though.

With IPB spam system it's all linked to all sites that use the software and if it's been put down as spam on one site it goes for all

Hm, that sounds kind of suspicious.

Well, hopefully they review that it's actually spam being pushing that to all the other sites.

Unless it's a blatant spammer or troll, not very quick.

In almost a decade of my current forum, I've only had to ban four people - and one of those was eventually allowed back. (One was a staff member who turned traitor; two were found to be completely faking their online personae; and one requested a ban after falling out with myself and others)

It does, doesn't take one click of an button, does has to go though..

Whoa, you guys are way too trigger happy. I hope you understand that banning should be considered the last line of escalation after all other avenues have been taken.

It's alarming that you guys are so quick to ban new members. New members are the ones MOST likely to not understand the protocol of the site, it's rules or regulations. If anything, you should be reaching out in a friendly manner to thank them for contributing, ask them what they were trying to accomplish, and help them achieve that goal.

Banning should only be used in rare instances after multiple and repeated warnings.

Outside of the bots or people clearly intended to spam up the place in an attack, not very easily to get me to ban you because I see having to ban someone as a failure to rectify a situation and I don't like to give up easily on fixing situations where a ban might have to be put into place. I believe I only had to ban two people who weren't intentionally attacking the place or a bot in my years of service as an forum admin which would be from 2005 to 2011.

I'll ban a spammer and their IP address immediately. I've never had to ban any legit members though and I have a few that would be banned on most forums.

I would be wary of using IP Bans too much, many spammers are really machines infected with viruses. They're a powerful tool, but should usually be used with extreme care.
