On some sites that I go to, the email newsletter subscription box pops up just seconds after I hit the page. And, often the pop up covers the main content, so you either have to subscribe or click to get rid of the subscription box or else you can't see anything on the page you are visiting.

This technique is likely effective to get some subscribers. Though from my own point of view, I consider it to be annoying. As I'm not likely to subscribe to a site's newsletter if I have not yet read anything on their site.

I would like to have the chance to at least read some of what is on the site first before being asked to subscribe.

Though from the other point of view, I can see why they would be so quick to trigger a subscription pop up, as many times a visitor will leave the page quickly if not instantly interested.

At least with with pop up, you have a better chance of snagging a subscriber if what's offered for sign up is even a little interesting.
