I am trying to register a domain, lets say xyz.com

xyz.com is taken but I can have xyz.co.uk instead.

my niche is related to English subjects, so is it stupid to get xyz.co.uk knowing that xyz.com is a well established site.

what would you suggest?

thanks!

think of a new name or purchase the one you want from the owner.

Think of another name.

Competing with an established site (assuming it's medium-sized) isn't a smart idea, (maybe) unless the domain is perfect, i.e. blog.co.uk, or forum.co.uk.

Is the xyz.com also in your niche? Is it going to be the same type of site? If yes to both, definitely get a different domain name.

yes xyz.com is also same niche... so i think its smart to think of a new name...

thanks guys for your help.

Its hard to come up with a unique name unless you make up some nonsensical word like I did. 😛

I'd say if you did create something with the same name as an existing forum, you should try to make every other aspect of your forum different and original so you don't get accused of being a copier.

Agreed. When it comes to forum promotion, it's best to have a unique name, especially if the name in question already has a fan base. The domain name does mean a lot to whether or not your forum will be noticed, but it's best to have one that won't be confused with another.

Again, good luck!

If the .com isn't available go for another domain name. If you want the same niche just choose another keyword...

Like what the others said; just pick a new name. Better to do just the simple thing in this case.

the new name is a better, faster and free alternative.

its sucks that the xyz.com is taken, but you will find a new name

good luck

Looks like this is going to be hard since SaintSinner said the niche will be similar... More or less there would have been similar sections and content from both, and he will still end up being "accused of copycat".

I think the decision to think of a new name is the best. Unique names are hard indeed, even in the marketing process later on, but with strong content and community basis you will be able to do it.
