Some of my original forum members, the ones who helped me start the site, have now abandoned us for their own pursuits. Occasionally, I will see their username pop up on the "who's online" username list. Just wondering what I can do to get these users to come back and post and be active in the forum community again.
I really wish I could make suggestions, but I have seen this a lot when promoting on other forums. For instance, like this one. Some members will show up with other ideas in mind. They might sign up, mention themselves in the introduction thread and then jet off for their own pursuits. This is something I am not sure of how to work around, though, so I can't give advice.
Maybe you could do something that would recognized their long stay. For example, give them a free domain? Buying domain in bulks would be cheaper. So lets say if you buy 10 or 20 for those number of members.
I try to contact them individually as much as possible to try and chat with them about what I can do to get them to return. Some of them just get busy with other stuff and forget about the site. Sometimes people just completely ignore me, but a few people here and there coming back is always better than non IMO.
I have quite a few different methods to contact people on my sites with Xbox LIVE being one of the key features of my gaming sites, I can message the via their gamertags on Xbox and try to get them to return.
You can try to email people, but that has its ups and downs as well.
