How do you deal with spammers using proxies? I think this is a tough one for forums to deal with.

We've had this happen to codersCommunity 6 times with over 300 messages each time sometimes 500+ so I would love to see what people have to say.

Ban, ban, ban, and keep banning.Especially if it's heavy spam. Show absolutely no reaction to these guys at all. Throwing a tantrum or reacting to it any way shape or form, will only fuel their fire and they'll just keep getting after you all the more, because they thrive on your hurt or upset feelings. So all you can do is just keep banning them. They'll eventually give up once they realize you're not playing games and that you are serious.

Yes but what if its repetitive spam? Say about 50 times? Posting all that content... :shake:

Personally, I just block out popular proxies and there is nothing else I can do apart from keep banning them.

Most of your forum software has modifications for blocking a proxy. It probably wont block them all but any ones you can block is a good idea.

You could disable registrations for a while to keep them from registering. It's far easier to do that and they will get bored quickly since they won't stick around for too long if they can't do anything. You could also go the admin validation route for a while if you still want to allow people to join.

MyBB has a plugin called Goodbye spammer, which will help you delete/close all topic created by an user, remove his signature, website link, etc, and even ban him, in a single click.

If you keep on doing this, whenever you find spam, they would eventually give up.

I had a spammer on my old verstion of my forum unluckily I was on forumotion very poor anti spam security but what I did was keep banning the spammer he also claimed that he would hack into my admin panel and destroy my community but if your on mybb or phpbb look for some anti spam mods and keep banning the spammer

Also, Flood control can also help a lot but try not to make it to high it can annoy users

Well, I guess I should go to another host in stead of forumotion.. They keep on saying their forum gets hacked!

I'd get away from Forumotion if I were you, Susan. As Spudster has rightly said, sites hosted on that worthless excuse of a host are so easily hackable it's not even funny. As I've probably mentioned before, last year or the year before, it seemed like every time you turned around, another person is asking for help and support because their site was hacked. I wouldn't go back to Forumotion for anything.

FreeForums does have some downtime most of the time but I dont know about there secuity as ive never ran a commnnuity on them
They should be better then forumotion

Meh. I could probably go to FreeForums.

From what I'm lead to understand, Freeforums isn't that much better. In fact, I seem to recall a topic somewhere where Fowler mentioned why the staff here were so anxious to get out of freeforums the first chance they got and go for actual hosting. However, if you're low on funds, you can always use http://www.prophpbb.com. They offer free as well as paid plans, awesome uptime, really nice loading speed, the whole 9 yards. They've also got very friendly support staff that are always happy and willing to help you with any situation you might have.

Forumotion had horrible support

but there are also free cpanel hosts around such as http://mycpanel.co.uk if you carnt afford paid hosting im with them and only had minor probablems

But its great for a free cpanel host 😀

I think phpBB3 is a good version. I don't really like phpBB2.
They've got phpBB3? Awesome.

I'm not paying $15 for a domain for FreeForums!! Even though its less in the UK...

Does ProphpBB have the same features as phpBB?

phpBB is a forum software. Prophpbb is a host. They do host actual phpBB. Only with the free plan, you can't install mods or anything on your own, but on their premium plan you can do your own work and make things how you want them.

Can you like make HTML pages?

Not sure, to be honest. I think if you went with their premium plan, which is advanced hosting, I think you can make some sort of page out of it. However, on the free plan there's very little you can do on your own. I should point out that if you do go for a free plan, they're sort of stingy regarding requests for mods to be installed as well as themes. The idea you suggest has to benefit all the sites hosted with them on the free plan, but on the premium, as I said, I think you can add what you want and get it done how you want it to be done.
