Can someone give me a somewhat detailed map of areas that should be more or less "required" when choosing who should deserve to be a Moderator or not? Big debate over it at my site. Any help, thanks.
Basically aslong as they follow these things you should be alright:-
Active on your forum already - If they are active now, they probably will stay active when they are a mod. If they sign up from another site just for the job it is likely they won't stay active.
Do you trust the user? Does he/she seem like they won't abuse their new permissions? Will they behave themselves and be a good moderator? Will they cause trouble or have arguments with other members? Does the user have bad reputations on other forums?
Do they understand and have knowledge on the topic of your forum? If they do then they are more likely to stick around and it shows they are more likely taking the job because they enjoy the forum and not just for the power to boss people around which some people enjoy.
How do we choose a Forum Moderator?

A Forum Moderator is chosen when we think we need one.
We do not host staff applications or anything of the sort. In order to be considered to become a forum moderator you must..
1. Be active on the forum already -- Post and make new threads.
2. The staff have to be able to trust the user. If we think you would abuse your powers, you will not get it.
3. Understand and have knowledge with our forum board and website here.
------------
You must be here for 1 month and have over 100 posts to be considered.
To be honest, you can't expect one mod to moderate every board and topic. That's too many topics to sort through; especially when you expect them to be active on the forum as well.
That's why you'd be ok with 3-4 mods. I have 5, and each one has a specific board they pay attention to. Though, they're all active all across the forum, and catch anything they come across. But, trying to find mods, and find their best interests on the forum, and let them pay more attention to that area.
See what section they're most active in; that would probably be their target zone. 😉
The "less" they feel they're required to do; the more they'll wanna do. But, the more work you try to put on them, they'll get sick of being a mod, and slack up. (It's a reverse pychology kinda thing 😉 )
Obviously I'm smart enough now to know not to make random people moderators. Due to the fact the last 2 on the older Discussion Stylue were never active when the site was in the works.
I won't ever make those 2 mods again, unless they can turn around on this new one.
