I think putting ads in between replies on a topic can be good as well. I seen it being done on forums.

I believe adsence only let you have up to 3 adsense Text and image ads, and up to 3 Ad-link ads. Ad link ads are those ads which redirects you to a page full of ads which look like those Web page domain parking pages full of ads.
You can only have up to 6 ads (3 regular adsense banner ads and 3 ad-link ads.) I once accidently added an extra ad code, and it displays as a blank rectangle.
I notice for my blog, the top adsense ads earn more then the ones on the bottom.

Test, test, and test some more. Try different placements - it's not the same for all sites but above the fold (aka at the top of your page) is best. Test different colors and try to pick ones that best match your forum.
Also try switching things up to avoid banner blindness. My ad banners rotate between both AdSense and Amazon ads, this way a new ad is displayed so vistors and members don't completely block the ads out.

You also need to realize if you don't have the traffic/enough visitors. It would be very hard to get accurate results by testing different ad positions, so focusing on getting more visitors/traffic to your site is better in the beginning.

I'm not making fun of anyone, but I find it is kinda funny how most people in this section go on about adsense making big money or whatever. The truth is, if you know what you're doing, you dont need to stick your ad in a banner to spam everyone on every page of your site. And - honestly, the banner is the WORST place to put your ads. It's true that Adsense can bring in a lot of money - One of my larger sites (About 1 year old) makes $70-80 per day and the rest (less than 1 year old) make anywhere from $4-$20/day and WHICH MEANS YOU CAN DO IT ALSO - You just gotta do a little research 😉
One thing you need to keep in mind - Adsense cares about the coding of your site. If you have broken code, Google hates you - therefor your site wont get a very good pagerank so no one will find your site other than those you directly link (which effects page views and clicks). This means 2 things:
1) You need to make sure all your modifications are properly installed, your theme was coded properly and everything is literally perfect. You need to be able to pass a strict html validation.
2) You need to have an SEO optimized forum software such as phpbbseo. Without this, google, again, will hate your site. Now, upgrading to phpbbseo and fixing all the coding will not make the difference between you making $4 per month and $70 each month... heck - you probably wont even see a 1c increase in the money it makes BUT you will be setup for whenever you do the proper research necessary.
*Adsense ads are generated by the content on the page most content your forums have are not going to make much money from adsense (maybe a few cents every 1,000 page views).
Anyway, have fun and good luck figuring out how to actually make decent money with Adsense.

Most posts I read in this section seem to be about wanting to earn enough to help pay for a decent web hosting and domain name or a few extra bucks in the pocket. I can't really find any threads about how Adsense can make us internet millionaires.
Thanks for the tips on SEO. Your websites sounds interesting can you share a link, so we can learn how to code our forums and improve our SEO score with Google?
Direct, returning and referral website traffic, guest blogging can also lead to some ad clicks on a website.
Yahoo Answers, Youtube, ArticleBase, Squidoo, Hubpages, Facebook groups, blog replies, and article directory websites can increase earnings if you provide useful information which solves a specific problem like "how to make wine" and "not a promotional sales pitch on how great your website is". People are more likely to visit your website via your resource links and link to your website out of kindness.

You're missing the point.
Long story short - unless you're getting 10's of thousands of pageviews per day, adsense is pointless to have because, for each 1000 pageviews, you'll make about 8 cents (if you're lucky). Adsense pays you when you get a total of $100 so, making $4 a month isn't going to help you...not until 2 years later.
I will not share links to my blogs and I sold/closed most of my forums after I was laid off this past january - I'll share adsense/analytics reports - but no links. I'm hoping to get another community up and running and I'll be happy to share that with you all as an example. As for coding your forums - I already told you - download and install phpbbseo (google it) and make sure any modifications or extras you code into your forum are html/css valid (google the validator).
As for the people who are quick to slap advertisements and affiliate links on your site. Please keep in mind that the more external linking you do in your site, the worse your pagerank will be.

I've heard that Thesis is a very SEO optimized blog theme. I use it and I can find a Lisa video explaining the Thesis theme when she first started using it too:
