How to edit Pictures

I have pictures with white background that I want to get rid of. does anyone know of any free programs that will allow me to do this?? or any fast easy way this can be done?

GIMP can get the job done easily. You can use the Magic Wand tool or I think in GIMP it is called the Fuzzy Select tool to select the white parts and then press delete. Or you can use a path.
