What would it take to get a company to sponsor you, to say give you a free item and then you have a contest or a giveaway with that item, kinda like they did here with vbulliten. Any tips?

E-mail them, show them some statistics of your site, I guess you have to have something that will benefit them for them to want to help you.

You need to offer them something. In the case of a big forum like us, we can give exposure to the company/product. Companies won't pay anything if they feel they won't get anything back from it. Having a large amount of traffic and members/visitors is the best way to encourage companies to sponsor giveaways.

Do you have any companies in mind?

And to folwer, what about for fairly small communities? Like near 40,000 post small?

It all depends what your niche is 🙂

It's a general chat forum, perhaps amazon gift cards or something?
That would be your best bet, nothing particularly aimed at one group of people.

For smaller forums it is harder. You may get smaller things to giveaway if you are a smaller forum although if you are wanting high value products to giveaway then it will be harder. Not impossible though if your forum is a good fit for the company/product and you contact them at the right time or get through to a nice person 😀

Bigger companies already with alot of traffic/customers and who are growing already will be less likely to want to sponsor a forum. Companies with a new product, who are newly formed/rebranded or are not a clear leader in the market at the moment might be more willing.

I think I'll contact Amazon, Apple (for a gift card), best buy, and lifeproof (the case making company)

Thanks so much for your help!

Amazon was a no....

It's not surprising. The company has to gain something out of the advertising. You want to look for companies that would suit your niche - then you could ask them to sponsor the Amazon voucher or something. 🙂

In addition to the suggestions above, you could write reviews on your forum for products or services that you have used that might be of interest to your members and visitors. Even if the companies concerned won't provide you with free samples / review copies, writing reviews will show other companies what you have to offer and what they could potentially gain by providing you with products or services.

Paris Hilton used a similar strategy to become famous.

It'll be difficult for you because your forum is general discussion, it helps if your site is a certain niche.

I have contacted Amazon, Best Buy (they seemed really interested), vBulletin, Xenforo and IP.Board.

Only heard a response from amazon and vB.. .both were a no and the vB guy lied to me.

In what way did the VB guy lie to you?

Said they don't do sponsorships or giveaways.
Perhaps if you were a webmaster forum they might be more interested.
It is difficult seeing you are a general discussion forum with no specific niche. Companies would look to sponsor places where they are likely to stand a chance of getting something out of it (in most cases, new customers). A web hosting company wouldn't sponsor a sports website, for example. As this is a general discussion forum I can see why companies would be skeptical when it comes to offering discounts to your members who aren't directly related to their niche. Perhaps you ought to target something a little more "generic". For example, discount coupons on say "chocolate", "wine", "tourist attractions", "holidays", "hotels", etc. 😉
