Listening to music typically helps to make them less boring. Also watching tv can help too.

I dislike treadmills. No matter what you try to distract yourself with, they're still so painfully boring—like a hamster wheel.
Personally, running on the track at the gym is much more enjoyable. Progress feels more concrete, there are curves and sometimes people to navigate around, it's easier to change speed, and there's more to look at instead of just straight ahead.
If I do have to use a machine, I'd prefer an elliptical.
Beer bottles being thrown at you?? Or just at the side of the road?I don't need mental things to keep from boredom while running - as in on a track or road. Well, on the road - they're are plenty of beer bottles thrown. 😱
watch other people in the gym

Have your friend dump legos on the treadmill while you run barefoot. That'll make things less boring.
