Four quick and easy ways to see what methods of advertising you use are working best

  1. Whenever you are affiliating with someone, give them a link that is solely for their website. Tell them they must use it. The link should send any visitors from them to a page that tracks unique visitors quickly before redirecting them to your main page. This will tell you how much traffic you are getting from a specific website.
  2. Along with that you can look into statistics (most hosts should have this) that will tell you where most of your traffic is actually coming from.
  3. If you own a forum or comment-enabled site: Create a thread for users to specifically mention where they heard about your site.
  4. Set up a referral system on your website. This way users can either type in who referred them; or a user can send a specific link so people automatically register with their referrer automatically detected.

A short list, but hopefully helpful. Most of this is obvious, but many people neglect to actually utilize them!

This is a very helpful list. Nice post indeed! It is crucial to know where your traffic is coming from so you can stop wasting time on those sources that are not creating traffic and focus your energy on those that are.

Thanks man 🙂 Yes it definitely is crucial. Advertising somewhere and putting effort into an aspect of your project when it isn't actually helping that much isn't a good way to spend your time.

If there is any delay, though, it may remove any interest they had in the forum. I know I wouldn't be into waiting for it to re-direct me elsewhere. After all, what's good for administrative purposes may not necessarily be good for member's purposes.

However, an auto-redirect that hardly is there for a second? Or perhaps just something like

.../index.html?referer=TeleLit

for example, that would load the index page while sending something to the site to record a new user from TeleLit. Then behind the scenes (with site already loaded) the site would figure out whether it's a unique IP or familiar one.
