Lets say you are a member of a support forum (perhaps even a webmaster forum), and not staff on it. Then one day, after you had made a brief advertising spree on a number of forums that allow you to advertise (or doesn't even have rules regarding anything in general); what would you do if someone that obviously owns a forum you posted an advert on, decided to come to one of the forums you are a member of, and then starts complaining about the advertising thread you made, and starts throwing a fit just because your forum has paid services on it.

What would you do? Would you reply initially, specifying that it is just an ad thread, that they could lock the thread if they wanted to? Perhaps even telling them that they don't have to go to your forum and donate towards you, due to being angry over somewhere on your forum, saying that you could support the forum (Through VIP, Donations, etc).

Have you had that happen to you, or have you seen it happen before; where someone came to the forum you were a member of, just to complain about a forum being advertised, because that forum just happens to have payment options on it?

Seriously happened today with me. Big facepalm here. I don't get how some people (usually older people with limited funds), somehow comes to a conclusion that they must participate in paying for something, because it is being advertised, and then getting angry over it and exploding on others not involved with it, just because it was advertised on their forum.

I think I know what you are talking about. I'm new to this round of having a forum so haven't run into too many problems. I think that person just wanted some attention. Your info was clearly articulated. Nobody else had a problem with it. So that should tell you something 🙂
You already let them know what it was about. If they don't grasp it by now, they never will. I wouldn't add any more fuel to their fire. But I can see the frustration & the shaking of your head with this!

What you do on other people's sites shouldn't be brought back since 1. You were doing nothing wrong and 2. Its out of your home staff's juristiction.

I’d probably reply with some snarky comment that fit well within the guidelines as an attempt to bait the user into making an ass of themself than step away from the situation.

Or, ignore it.

What did you end up doing?

I haven't had that happen but I do think it should have been handled privately and the guy complaining is probably hard to deal with in real life as well as online.

And for that matter how did it end up playing out?

The person ended up having a temporary ban, because of her constant refusal of valid answers from people who knew better, and the fact that she did eventually get out of control right near the end, before a 1-2 day temp ban was placed on the account. Took nearly a month, from what I can tell, to get that out of her system enough to start posting on her own forum again, without referencing everything she thought was wrong.

Thank you for the update. Just sounds like she wanted attention.
