How would you handle removing a service if you ran/run a promotion forum? Do you delete the posts or trash them? Have you ever had to do this?

I would hide the old forum and delete chunks of it over time to prevent a very large amount just vanishing.

🙂

So would I. It seems like the way to go.

If I was to close a section on in this case a service I would post an announcement explaining the closure and then lock the forum and keep in public view for about a week then move all the topics to the rubbish bin section of the site and delete that section.

That way it is a gradule removal and all your active members have time to adapt.

I've never done this but I wouldn't delete them. I would archive them in a "Trash" board in the staff board or something.

Delete the forum and all the posts inside. I am not scared of my post count dropping.
Recently, I emptied a hidden trash forum with nearly 20,000 posts in it (nearly 2 years worth of accumulation).

I'm with Savvy, I would move them to an "Archive" board that is hidden from everyone else, however I would not delete them.

I forgot to add, is this in Relation to ForuMansion as I am a member there and intrigued to know what you have planned?

Personally I'd simply archive the posts. Are there any good reasons for doing anything else?

I do not understand why people would delete them.

Because the service has been removed so why would you want to keep useless posts that will never been seen by anybody?

IMO the best way would be to archive and delete 200 or so per week so there isnt a sudden big drop in posts.

I'd hide the forum from public and save the posts in case I decide to open the service up again sometime in the future.

That's a good idea. I would go with that.

Because having large amounts of useless & discarded posts hidden away serves no purpose, especially promotion forum service requests. It may make the forum look better until someone figures out that there is thousands of posts unaccounted for. Everyone understands there is staff discussion forums but once the number of hidden posts becomes extremely large, members are going to sense something fishy is going on.

I would just remove that service and pretend it never existed. Saves having to deal with why it disappeared and whatnot.
