Since I was a teen, I started out with forumotion forums and never had an issue with it. Yes, all free forums have that additional text in domain name but you can change almost everything and control panel is very user friendly. Their support forum has pretty good respond speed on any aspect of issue you can get and there are still fans who develop new features and publish them as tutorials.

Anyone tried?

I've always been skeptical to Forumotion. The obvious pros are the ones you mentioned: it's free, it works and it has active support. What I really don't like, however, is how you do not really own the data of your forum. If you ever want to move away from Forumotion for some reason, they do not offer a database export of sorts. Once you go Forumotion you're stuck with them. That kind of sucks, especially if you someday want to move towards getting more control of your site than Forumotion offers.

Oh wow, I didn't know this one. That kinda sucks to be honest. Plus you have no control over PHP part of the forum or databases itself. So, even if you build up community, you are stuck with them. It's not like I need some fancy features, some of them I can make it work with jQuery. But I see your point. However, XenForo is bets and most expensive.

XenForo is super expensive, yes! But still I'd much rather go for a plain old phpBB, NodeBB or MyBB installation on my own hosting rather than using Forumotion. That way I still get all the control over my own board, and the ability to move to another forum software at a later time.

NodeBB seems very cool but still it's 100 USD per month. Also very expensive. Imagine me starting a forum and pay that much even I don't know if it is going to be a sucsess or not.

That's just if you want them to host it for you. If you host it yourself it's free 🙂

So, let's say, I get a free hosting somewhere, they will give me some domain, of course by default to advertise themselves, but I can install NodeBB just like that?

NodeBB is a bit more complicated than phpBB and MyBB, because you need a hosting that can run Node.js. If your free hosting does that, then yes!

I will stick to the forumotion atm. But if the forum seem to get bigger, it's okay for me to stay there still because I don't need some extra cool features for normal functioning. People care about content more than features itself. And goth forums are super rare lately so the competition out there is slim to none. I checked it. :parrotmustache:

True that! Let me know if you ever need help setting up a custom installation, I might be able to help out a little bit 🙂

Thanks, my man.
By custom installation you mean what? For forumotion or? 😀

With the technical bits, getting a forum software installed etc
Oh, I see. I could work out that stuff. After all, I am android programmer, IT stuff are not stranger to me. And i know a bit of html, css, js, php. Could work it out. But thanks!

I used Forumotion on my very first forum. It was a Pokemon rom hacking forum, this was long before split disassemblies existed so people just used tools. I didn't know what I was doing so it didn't last that long. I prefer other free forum hosts if I'm going down the free forum route, but self hosting is the best IMO.

If you get a strong fan base, they won't mid transfering to better solution without threads if they love community. So, that's something at least, right? 😀
