You're not going to get any modifications on your forum if you get remote hosting.

If you want Mods, your going to need proper hosting. 😉

You're going to need a paid host if you want to be able to do more with a forum and a full flexibility.

I use Hawk Host and they are fantastic. No hiccup since I've started using them over a month ago.

mmmhhh yeh i know i might be getting it soon as soon as i cash up my eftpos, keycard and my paypal but i doubt that will be soon maybe 6 months 😛 and btw i got a good one

tell me if you think its decent?

You don't need paid hosting you can use free hosting (non server forum hosting) just the say but yes, I'd suggest going to pay for hosting. Maybe HawkHost really good services.

I think that almost everyone on this forum will say that forumotion is a horrible host. Just warning you that you have to be extremely dedicated to a forumotion forum to get people to join and stay active.

Not true, you can do it on a free host like webhostingfox... or sitefrost... paid hosting is unneeded.

There are two ways you can approach this - decide which option you want more:

1) You want to run a successful online community:
I would suggest starting off at a free host somewhere that will give you a database backup (free) and learning how to run a forum, get members, keep them interested, etc. Then, if you don't get bored and it's working out, get the database backup, and buy hosting then. I've used 1and1.com for the last 10 years or so and i've never had a problem with the service minus there was 1 time about 3 or 4 years ago when they experienced a 5 minute outage (5 minutes noticeable downtime in 10 years isn't bad)

2) You want to learn how to install mods and create a unique and successful online community:
Get hosting as soon as possible. Install phpbb (or whichever open source platform you want) then start teaching yourself (or have a friend help you) to install modifications, templates, etc. This way, you'll be able to get into the guts of forum modification early and wont have to screw around trying to get your database backup, then making sure it works with no glitches, etc.

*Just remember, whatever you decide: Get your forum set up 99% complete before you start advertising it. When it comes to online communities, first impressions are everything. If you have a dinky forum with a few posts here and there, only half the categories you eventually want plus a default template well....you're outta luck - no one will join.

I'm sure there are other topics on what needs to be done before you start advertising it to the public. Whatever the case - good luck!
